Help, I've got range anxiety!
« on: 08 May 2010, 01:00:12 »

The era of carefree motoring may soon be over, according to a study which reveals that drivers of the new generation of electric cars are plagued by nagging fears of being left stranded by a flat battery.

They narrow their horizons and rarely venture far from home, abandoning the old notion of the freedom of the open road.

A six-month trial involving 264 drivers found that almost all experienced “range anxiety” and travelled only short distances.

I don't agree.  I think electric drive is the way to go with motors in each wheel.

There are a lot of issues to sort out though, of which, the power source is probably the most pressing.

don't worry Liz everyone else did - i remember having to trek across a muddy field to get to a phone to call the aa for petrol (the days before mobiles...remember them?  ;D)

it was that hideous "corpse blue" colour favoured by early 90's Nova saloons and low spec Astras  :(

Agreed. Power source is easy though. Diesel engine plus alternator. :y Or get a bit more imaginative and use a gas turbine. Once you've got a decent traction system with some innovative control software you can make these sub-optimal engines more driveable. ;)

I think the electric car manufacturers should take a leaf out of Sir Clive Sinclair's proven method of overcoming power problems of the C5.....

Fit some pedals  ;)
