in-car cameras (not the reversing sort)
« on: 04 May 2010, 13:12:54 »

the typical dash cam sort you point out of your windscreen so you can record everything going on, like what many people in the states use to keep insurance costs down. i've seen a few of these on ebay quite cheap, wondering if anyone could shed some light on these from personal experience?

JamesV6CDX had mentioned something a good while back about them and at the time I wasn't after one but with the amount of idiots on the road i'd love to get some on film!!

I tried something similar last year, cost me £300 and kept data on an SD card. Images quite poor through windscreen, no good when it is raining, in the dark, images at best "blobby" not good enough to read number plates, and my insurance company (Admiral) does not recognise them as any tangible help. Gets used on my motorcycle now to record a good bike road.

Lot of money for little useage in my opinion. The CCTV supplier I deal with at work can only supply a
hd quality one, but wants £420 for it. Don't think it is cost effective against insurance costs, but in reality can assertain blame in a "your word against mine" situation only.

Hope this helps.

Tunnie recently started a thread about a camera he'd got off eBay to use on on his bike:

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1271711583

These are cheap enough to get one for the front and one for the back... and the video looks reasonable.

On the insurance issue, I know of many cyclists who during the fight for compensation toward damage to bikes et al have used camera footage to prove the driver was completely in the wrong.  In one case the driver just cut right in front of the cyclist who was quite legally cycling down the road.  Bike was a write-off and a few broken bones yet even though the written reports were damning they were trying to fight the cyclist's claim....until they saw the footage whereby they folded like a paper staircase  ;)

There are definately a lot of "pros" to the idea, just a lot of "cons" too...............

In theory it should be a brilliant idea, stops the "your word against mine" arguments stone dead, but.......
storage of images and photoshopping of images stops it being used as evidence in a court UNLESS it is time and date stamped on the images.
This makes the equipment prohibitavely expensive.

Good idea.  But sadly a lot of cyclists dont act in a legal maner by pulling some of the stunts they do (Especially the red light dash)

I tend to give cyclists as much space as I can, and even more to some of the moronic motorists I have come accross over the years.

Having been knocked off my bike (Through no fault of my own - I was stationary at the time) as kid (and only being allowed on the road because I had passed my cycling proficiency test) I am well are how dangerous it is for cyclists.  I am still of the opinion that cyclists and horse riders some have some entitlement on some sort to be on some of the classes of roads we have today.

I am not sure if there is any sort of legislation in place, but if not there should be.  Obviously any one passing any part of a driving licence has been trained to understand the roads.

But kids of any age can jump on a bike and ride down the majority of the roads, and maybe to a degree is the same for horse riders.  Insurance ought to be compulsary for all road users, anyone could end up in an accident, I once had a horse stampede over my Jag going into town one day, 10 year old girl was riding, something spooked it at a junction, the girl wasnt experienced enough to cope.  She took it with out the owner knowing she was on roads with it.  But she could have got seriously injured

Most bikers are responsible and experienced and understand the driving habits of people arround them as Gaffers does, it's that odd percentage, the push nike couriers, (Certain) teenagers that dont respect the road or people on it.

Gaffers, please dont take me the wrong way, I am actually on your side, but if we could repect and treat others as equals on the road then maybe there would not be any accidents, sadly there is, it's that that is not equal, as motorits, we have Tax. test, insurance and a licence to be there, a cyclist needs none of these.

Yes, I bought one when I saw tunnies video. It is a smashing little bit of kit, but, if you get one,  treat it gently & don't drop it like I did getting out of the car! It is now in the bin after using it for 2 days!  >:(. Mind you, I suppose I can't complain, it didn't say it was muppet proof! ::) ;D :y

Cyclists who flaut the law annoy the crap out of me and I would happily knock a few over myself to teach them a lesson.  But I make a point to follow every rule of the road as a cyclist yet I have about 3 near-misses a month one of which is usually trouser changing stuff.  The latest was a beemer that for some unkown reason lerched onto my side of the road on a narrow lane.  He's lucky I have good brakes as I was doing well over 20mph at the time.
