Need a new video camera
« on: 01 July 2010, 23:22:38 »

My old one is basically worn out. And a bit bashed.

Looks like I am down to Sony or Canon for tape based now.

I now need to save up £800 before the internet sellers sell out!!!!

What models are you looking at Martin.

Am surprised you are not considering going to HD Widescreen.

Interesting answer.  I'm still on Mini DV but SD.  They are still going to need to transfer to another medium at some point though.  That's when the compression temptation kicks in  ;D.  I usually lay off to DVD so choose how many to make out of a tape according to perceived value of source material.  I still keep the masters.

FYI HDV standard does not accept 1920x1080, it maxes-out at 1440x1080 so recorders down-convert and (hopefully) up-convert on playback.  Other formats do other reckless things to make storage time acceptable.

If you're burning irreplaceable family footage just remember not all blank DVD's are equal, some of the Ritek dies had a life span measured in months (Taiyo Yuden came out top). I investigated this a few years back to see if DVD was a viable long term archive for company data, as you might guess we didn't go that way!

I have recaptured all of my old Beta camera tapes and filled a 1TB HDD with them. Mini DV tales 14GB per hour and I my camera won't survive recapturing the rest.

I always keep the original hence not wanting HDD or memory card.

It's what data-storage people archive data onto if they really, really, really value it. :)
