However I do not have to accept the same sort of attention when using various internet fora, and therefore chose a username that gives nothing away.

Sounds fair enough to me, lots of us use an obscure name to keep our "real lives" away from our internet identites.
Also, some of us are a bit shy, and calling ourselves some other name means we can "hide" away from day to day life too.
