The IT doods at my wifes work have blocked some websites from being viewed at her work  rather important ones like ehem ebay and argos etc

is there a way round this by using some sort of proxy where her browser opoints at my home machine which in turn forwards it to her works machine ?

There are always ways round it, but ultimately her employers do it for a reason.  Most companies look upon bypassing their security systems as a disciplinary offence, usually resulting in instant dismissal.

Additionally, for her employers, those sites are unimportant to what the company does (presumably, else they wouldn't be blocked)...

I dont remember the name exactly but there is a small utility program that can by pass websense
without any proxy..I used in the past..

but be careful those utitily programs mostly include
trojans .. if the company uses a common virus detector and if it catches the virus she will go in trouble.. :-/

Your wife could try asking the IT department for access to those websites when she is on her break, but if they decline then I would advise her to accept that and save the shopping for when she is at home.

Doesn't have to be a rasberry, most smartphones have reasonable internet now, be it from RIM, crApple, Microsoft, Google or Nokia.

try "tor browser bundle", it runs from a memory card or folder!  very slow but it might bypass the company firewall.

If they have bothered to put safeguards in place they will also be monitoring for their circumvention, IMHO. Running TOR will ring alarm bells without a shadow of a doubt.
