Tax Disc info
« on: 30 July 2010, 12:39:09 »

I know a lot of people are unclear driving a car when the tax disc has ran out - this seems to clarify it, found it while looking for something else from the FAQ page

My vehicle's tax disc (road fund licence) ran out today, can I drive it until I get another one?

A change in the law came into effect from the 1st of September 2008. From this date it is legal for motorists to drive or keep their vehicle on the public road without a current tax disc for the first five working days of the month immediately after the current tax disc has expired. This exemption from displaying a tax disc applies only when an application for a new disc has been made before the previous one has expired. Motorists are advised to display the expired tax disc, however they will be committing an offence if they continue to use or keep the vehicle on a public road without a current valid tax disc after the first five days of the month.

BUT its only for first 5 days, AND if you have already bought tax (but it hasn't yet arrived in post)

as long as the dvla has received a payment for the disk you have five days but you still have to display the old one. it is an offence to not display

It is an offence not to show a valid tax disc.  The only exception, as this thread debates, is within the first 5 days of the calendar month, and only if you have bought a tax disc (but not arrived).

If you buy a tax disc after the first 5 calendar days of the month, you HAVE to wiat for it to turn up before you can drive the car

If you haven't got the money for a new RFL just go and pay by cheque at your local Post Office, it takes them ages to get the RFL back when the cheque bounces  ;D ;D

The grace is not on not having tax, just not displaying it for the first 5 days....
