Ok I am being lazy.

I have created a localhost site on my PC using Drupal and Xampp to prototype major changes to an association's website.  I now want to showcase the prototype but I would prefer to do it from my computer.  Is it possible or will I have to upload it to a webserver?

Depending on your Audience..... are you showcasing it in person?  If so, I'd personally use the Webserver, but give a odd URL to the prototype site.  I take it you dont want to upload it so it cant be 'stolen'?

Encryption is not generally available for 'basic' web hosting, but you may have the option to password protect certain pages.

Do you mean you want to host the site from your PC for someone to view over the web?

It should be possible. You'll need to open up port 80 to your PC through your router or whatever you use to connect to the web. Then point a domain name to your IP, or give them your IP address for them to directly enter in the URL.

Might be worth finding the IP addresses of those to which you want to demo this site (assuming it's just a few people) so you can allow traffic only from those known IP addresses. That will stop the hackers descending on your machine as soon as you open the port.

This all assumes your (and their) IP addresses are static, or at least will remain so for long enough to achieve what you want.

EDIT: Choose a bizarre port number to hide it if your intended audience are savvy enough to enter a suitable URL.

I am not worried about it being stolen.  I was just wondering if it is possible.


The problem is I am part of an association where I am one of the youngest members (at 33!)  A lot of the membership are older and while the general consencous is to attract more young-uns in many dont want to change from Yahoo groups which I find awful to use.  I am confident that once they see how easy drupal is to use they will change their minds but I dont want to just stick something on their server in case I get blamed for breaking something.

It's possible, but unless your on a fixed ip the URL to he site will change quite often. Depends how long you need to give them access. Not rebooting your pc would help

The other option is that you can get hosting that will support a Drupal site for sub-£5 a month. Might be worth stumping up a couple of months' subs to build it and see if they come?

Not really. Depends on how secure your web server setup is then. There are sometimes holes in default Apache installs that are readily exploited and bots scan for open port 80s to identify machines to target.

If you're worried about it google for a guide on securing Xampp and it will probably cover anything that's notorious for that distribution.

Might be worth considering building a virtual (or real) machine for the purpose as a sandbox rather than exposing your PC. Depends how much effort you want to go to against what you have to lose, I guess.
