Seriously thinking now about my Miggy's replacement in January.
I do a lot of long distance mileage, and my 3.0 estate is fantastic- but would I benefit really from going Diesel??

There is a 2.2 DTi, and a 2.5 BMW engine, and I know NOTHING about either, the good/bad bits etc which is better? NEED: wight carrying and distance capability, so HAS to be estate, but currently get 30mpg+ from my V6, and love the comforts of the elite. MUST be automatic, and some people say auto is a mistake in Diesel, some say no probs, which is right? got to be AR35 if auto, cos of strength and longevity, round town mileage at the moment is 23-26 roughly, and can do 33 on a run. How do the Diesels match up?

As I asked Kevin Wood, should I stick to 3.0 V6??

Hi Mike, hope you're well.

2.2 DTi never came in automatic form, and is only a 4 pot, so won't be a great choice for you.

3.0 is, in my opinion, the best engine. If your car is a good'un, which it certainly appears to be (Especially after our day's cambelt / oil cooler work, and your suspension work), then I'd be inclined to keep it

2.2dti is manual, and you really need manual box in 2.5td to get best from it....

So v6 it is then

2.5/6 may be worth a look as well

I've never driven a tractor Omega so can't really comment but I'm not convinced, based on the fuel consumption figures I've seen banded around here, that going for one would save me enough money to make up for the loss of performance and refinement.

An LPG V6 is certainly the best option for me, but to each their own.

My PreF 2.5TD Manual Estate was my main works vehicle for a long while, the BM lumps are good work horses, a bit under powerd for the heavy mig but does it job well.

I use to do a lot of miles fully loaded with the back seats down, full of heavy coax cable drums, tools, steel brackets etc added with 2 sets of ladders, steps and a roof box full of crap on the roof with no real complaints from the Mig at all, would be quiet happy being cruised at 77+ish, would still return over 40mpg on a run and 34 all day long around town fully loaded.

Think if I had to that all over again I would chose a Diesel over a Petrol or LPG.

Start talking £45.87 and we could have a deal.

The 3.2 Elite estate's are few and far between,
however...more recently a few have popped up.
On ebay there's an '03' with 120k miles in silver, starting at £2000 with a reserve.
I have made some more serious enquiries with Chinese and Japanease car sales and export companies. They have the 2.5 DTI there in RHD, both saloon and estate, one is billed as an 2005 one. Clearly we all know it isn't really, but I gave the DOR to the DVLA and they said it would be registered here as an '05' plate.
The spec is a bit different, I think they use the NCDR 2011, and they also have electrically folding door mirrors and different names for the trim levels.

Some years ago I had an almost new CDX TD Auto Saloon after having had an Elite 3.0 Auto Estate.

Without changing anything in my driving style the MPG went from an average 25 with the V6 to an average 36 in the TD.

I took the TD from 23k to 39k and the V6 I'd had from new to 45k when I got rid of it.

I can't think of a polite way to say "if economy is a priority maybe don't run a great big Mig in any form". You can have a lovely shiney mint Elite but start it up & it sounds & smells like a bus. You've got a good V6, do as most of us do. Wear the cost & enjoy.
    If you do alot of miles is it an option to buy a cheapie diesel van or other car to use as a workhorse?
