Jeez..........

Whats acceptable norm in the pub or face to face with others is one thing.  Online, here, its quite another.

Not wanting to resurrect old threads but you crossed the line with your (now modded) post.  Cease and desist, please.

Personally, rather you didn't but, that said, a certain other admin uses it regularly on here.  And his train set is bigger than mine.......

AmigoMV6 ....    and breathe .........  :)  :)  :)

The rules have been around for ages and make a huge amount of sense.

Your artic prime mover was designed .. power, brakes, chassis .. to be able to pull a full trailer up to its designed (permitted) weight .. thats what it was built to do.

A car was not built to tow a trailer specifically .. but has a certain ability to do so. The manufacturers therefore LIMIT the maximum allowable weight that can be towed, hopefully knowing the chassis, brakes, steering etc etc effects and limits.

That figure is published on the VIN plate and cannot, legally, be exceeded.

Some cars do NOT have a towing weight specified, and do not have the facility to fit a tow bar .... it is actualy illegal to modify and tow with such a car ... why ?? because the maker does not think it safe !!!

It matters not your level of towing experience or ability ... the laws of physics cannot be overcome by wishful thinking .. if the trailer ('van) weighs more than the car then in an emergency it WILL take control .. and you the driver will lose control .....

This happens to artics as well .. and they were designed to tow .. we've all seen the result of a jack-knived artic .. not a pretty sight ... it just gets worse with an overweight 'van to car setup.
Yes i agree but forget manufacturers drawl that's only to stop them getting sued by stupid people & forget artics, bad example on my part, different geometry & ballgame, in fact forget ALL the facts & figures, stats, studies, all the B/S, let's get back to the real world & ask......
If your caravan got a "tankslapper" on regardless of why or how, which wheel would you rather be sat behind with your loved ones as passengers? An Omega or similar large size saloon /estate or a daft wobbly 4x4 that actually wieghs little more & is alarmingly top heavy? No brainer surely?

I towed our Caravan with Range Rovers and never had an issue at all, thats a 4x4!!
If you tow another Omega with an Omega you certainly know its there... anyone who says different I am afraid is telling porkies...
I have not towed a Caravan with an Omega yet but will be soon enough ;)

Not gonna argue with those sentiments at all ... which is why I choose an Omega and not a 4X4 .. and I do a LOT of towing !!!

However I would also not exceed the cars plated weight, for the reasons stated.

I've not had a "tankslapper" as you put it .. and hope never to have one .. but I have had a major "upset" that involved all 3 lanes of the motorway.. luckily for me everyone got out of the way and the rig returned to normal after about 30 seconds ....

The reason was simple .. excessive speed .. I had been powering up a long climb and didn't ease off at the top ... so was going much faster than intended on the downhill side when the "cutting" ended and a side wind hit me .. add the 2 together and the answer was frighting. .. it is my belief that had the van been overweight I might not be here .. as it was the car handled the weight and as it slowed (foot off no braking) the problem went away.....  eventually.... but those 30 seconds felt like a lifetime  :(

As I said .. laws of physics ...  :(

4x4's will tow anything but more likely to tip over than a car if things go pear shaped just due to height & long bouncy suspension. Anyway, stuff that, now you've been promoted are you getting a caravan??? 8-)

I havent towed another Omega with an Omega, but I towed a 1992 Granada Scorpio with it the other day, and quite honestly, it was a walk in the park for the Mig.  I knew it was there, because I could see it in my mirrors!  ;D
