Omega History
« on: 25 August 2010, 18:13:41 »

Hi guys,

I'm not actually a new member but I've had to register a new name cos I'M rubbish with computers haha ::)

Ok I was looking through some Omega reviews and came across details of the car the Omega replaced in '87 (I believe).

It was the Vauxhall Rekord.

Does anyone know anything about these? Were they any good? Did anyone own one?

just interested :)

cheers.

The Omega replaced the Senator and Carlton. The Rekord was a bit earlier iirc. ;)

In Britain the Omega came in to replace the Vx Carlton and the Sentor variant around 1995 / M Reg as I understand it.

The name was used by Opel in Europe on what Vx called Carltons, but I thought the Rekord was a completely different Opel model (???) ;) ;)

The Rekord was the Opel version of the Viceroy, then Carlton. In UK the Rekord disappeared when the MK2 Carlton came out, around 1983

In Europe the Rekord remained until the 1st 'new' shape Carlton around 1987 i think it was 'E' Reg roughly, that was when in Europe it became the Omega

In Europe you have the Omega A(UK Carlton) and B.... in UK we only had Omega B

there's been a few "Omegas" over the years.

Opel called the platform "V"-car, first used I believe for the Opel Commodore in the earlty seventies. The history since then is something like........

Opel Commodore - two and four-door models, tie-bar front suspension & live axle rear suspension.

Opel Rekord introduced with shortened V-car platform, eventually becomes Vauxhall Carlton. Again tie-bar front suspension & live-axle rear

Senator A/Monza. Introduced in late seventies to replace Commodore. (also Vauxhall Royale) Tie-bar front suspension & independent rear suspension

Omega A / Carlton / Senator B Introduced 1987 to replace the mini V-car. independent front and rear suspension

Omega B introduced 1994. same front and rear suspension carried over.

interestingly, Opel also exported the platform to Australia, where it became the large Holden, surviving with the tie-bar front suspension until 2002, when the late V-car independent front suspension made an appearance. Also became Pontiac GTO / Chevrolet Caprice.

Rekord  Commodore Senator

Omega A in EU replaced Rekord and Commodore,
There was no replacement for Monza unfortunately
Senator during that time was  slightly upscaled more luxurious model of omega A.
Whent Omega B came on the market Senator was dropped from production completely
