do tyres actually have a life ??
I mean the other day I had a flat tyre so I got it changed and the guy said that your tyre's has finished so use it as less as possible and get a new one soon,
the thing is that, that spare tyre is brand new and is used only once ( yesterday ) for a distance of a max of 10 miles !!
and its been there in the boot for the past 8 years, so what hes saying is that a brand new tyre has been wasted by just sittin there in the boot and not being used ???

If you get a full size spare then you use it in rotation with the normal tyres
The rubber degrades over time, look at an elastic band an old one breaks easier than a new one :y

Tyres have a manufactured date on them ,and if memory serevs me correctly,they have a legal life of 8 years after which they should be changed as they degrade.
Not sure if an MOT test would fail due to tyre age but suppose it is possible,although our old clit which does about 100 miles a month has not had new tyres as long as we have had it and never had issues on MOT.

I think the MOT will look at the condition of the tyres, not just the tread depth, they will look for age related cracks.

When I bought my Ford Explorer earlier this year it had great tyres but they had all cracked on the beading through lack of use, so had to throw away 4 Goodyear tyres with 8mm tread :(

tires harden with time.. even if they have enough thread depth they dont hold the road and risk you and other people in every critical situtation.. and as an experience I change them at 4 or 5 th year whatever their thread depth..

i doubt the spare tyre would have perished, it can only be a couple of years older than mine which is mint, unless its been kept in direct sun light all that time?

did you keep to 50kph limit for a space saver? assuming yours is the same as mine of course? or is he talking about your original punctured tyre?

What about cars from years gone by then.

You know the sort of thing, the ones that have 3 outings a uear.  2 of those being the MOT and the Lonfon to Brighton Rally for example.

tyres degrade by a) age and by b) sunlight (ultra-violet)

there is indeed a date code on all tyres made after 2000

there is no legal limit on tyre ages

it is the driver's responsibility to make sure the tyres are fit for purpose.

"Tires are composed of high percentages of organic rubber compounds and are subject to biodegration!

Ions of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and other transition metals that have different oxidation states with comparable stability and which are easily oxidized or reduced by one-electron transfer, are called “rubber poisons”.


They are very active catalysts for hydroperoxide decomposition. Hydroperoxides are species within the "autooxidation cycle" that contribute to the degradation of rubber vulcanizates.


Rubber poisons present in vulcanizates, even in trace amounts (below 5 parts per million), increase the decomposition rate of hydroperoxides and thus accelerate oxidation and aging of rubber goods.


Therefore, rubber that contains or could be in contact with rubber poisons requires a specific stabilizer, a so-called metal deactivator. The metal deactivator, Ciba® IRGANOX® MD 1024, binds ions into stable complexes and deactivates them.


Rubber articles most affected by rubber poisons are cables and hoses, but the problem can occur also in other applications....

The hangar is was on..the bolts holding the hangar up. In the garage I assume? Metal tooling, moisture carrying metallic ions..so on..so forth.."

any rough idea on how much two pairs of Michelan tyres would cost for my omega ??
I dunno the size, lol
