Car tax online
« on: 07 September 2010, 18:16:43 »

If you buy your car tax online, are you ok to drive on the road, or do you have to wait for the tax disc to arrive? TIA Dave

As per instructions on back of form, you can drive for the first 5 days of the month only without displaying tac disc. So you can't drive now until it arrives.

It's a bit of a grey area.  It is still an offense not to display a valid tax disk even if you are waiting for it in the post.  However if you have renewed it online you have 5 days grace, or so I read on here once from a reputable source  :-/

I would carry a copy of the online receipt until the disk arrives  :y

That 5 day grace is only valid:

1st-5th day of month
AND
You have purchased tax online

Checking with DVLA on this, you SHOULD apply on-line 5-7 days before the previous tax is to expire to ensure the new tax disc arrives in time. The offence of "not displaying a valid tax disc" STILL applies if you do your tax on line on the last day of the month, Contrary to popular belief, there is NO grace period whilst your new disc arrives, the offence of not displaying will then apply and you CAN be proscecuted from the 1st of the month!!

Sorry fellers. Hate to be the bringer of bad news, but if it saves one person from being done because of ignorence......

This information came from the DVLA office, Lime kiln Road, Bristol.

Hi,I,ve been using my sons 206 since he,s gone to South Africa for a month, last Sunday a PSCO was delivering flyers for a public meeting, noticed that the tax disc had fell from the windscreen, stuck an offical warning notice  to the screen, saying that I would be reported to the DVLA for not displaying a valid road fund disc.

Incorrect.

If you buy tax online, there is a grace period if both of the following are true:

date is 1st to 5th
you have purchase tax via the online website

This is printed on the back of the renewal sheet ;)

And online...

I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?

When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.

yep. read that before I posted, asked DVLA because of the highlighted sentence. The important bit was "before", if you apply for it online on the last day, you DON'T get a grace period, so technically, we are both right.

Last day is before it expires (all tax expires on midnight on last day of month), so as long as ordered before or on 23:59 of last day of month, you have the grace :y
