my grandad has 12 brothers and 3 sisters, all from stepney east london. my nan was adopted after being found on the steps of a church in westminster, probably a royal baby born to a peasant. and my other nan performed at the royal albert hall to a packed house when she was 6 years old, she was born in holland before the first wolrd war. cant believe ive foreign blood in me, gutted

There could be money to be earned from this subject if you knew the best ways and means of going about it on a commercial basis.
It seems that a lot of people are fascinated by their family history these days, and Im sure quite a few of them dont have the time to diy, but have the cash to pay someone to do it for them.
Although as HC says there are quite a few people already doing it so it may be a bit cut throat. :-/
Personally Im not much interested in most of my living relatives and not remotely interested in any of the dead ones.

Hi Robbo -- seems we might be related !!! I have Longshanks in my line.

There are a lot of established researchers based around the country, so competition will be stiff. And, as mentiuoned above, some families are nigh on impossible to trace, whilst others are easy, so the experience of one line is not a lot to base a career choice upon.

I have a relatively uncommon surname, and have been at it (so to speak) for nigh on 3 decades ..... and still not quite done tying everything up. If you get involved with the Heralds you are right up against a stone wall !!!!

hiya count you may be right  my link is only through marriage though  :-/ my wife has traced both my parents sides and hers but has only got back to the 1400's with her parents and my mothers side it is fascinating though to find out what and where you came from !! i must thank you all for your thoughts on the matter i feel that if she enjoys doing the geaniology bit then why not have a go as she is already signed up with the best sites so is not loosing anything except her time and maybe her sanity  i know she has hit brick walls with researching various parts of the family, namely scottish and irish ancestors but has eventually found her way through the mine fields lol and she is now finding that the monarchy and gentry are causing problems with dates of births etc and also information as to confirming links with the royals  :-? well if it keeps her happy and off my back so be it

i keep meaning to go to holland but have never been, we was all going for my 50th next year but have now decided on butlins adult weekend instead. i was sure to get a ride in holland as well

Robbo, yes, when you start going along lines by marriage it gets pretty sticky!  Luckily for me I am a direct male line descendant, so a lot easier to trace.

I know full well what you mean about royal connections .... they get very defensive, especially if your connections actually make you more "Royal" than the Windsors!  Fortunately, by virtue of Diana, the Princes will put British royal blood back on the throne.  But I digress..

It can be frustrating in the extreme when you know a connection is correct, but can't document it! For one of my connections I ended up producing a certified copy of a 150 year old newspaper from Nevada to the Heralds before they would accept it!

Anyways ... best of luck to you both --- it IS addictive. You will just have to spend more time on OOF while she researches

Jereboam -- I know that feeling!  Have been busy of late consolidating the cosmetics website, as well as setting up the wife's new venture, English / French translations (so far have had commissions ranging from translating and writing for websites, translating legal documents for a french canadian company, to writing letters of submission to the Columbian Government !!!!! ). In between this has been the normal daily rigours of home and work life, as well as project managing the build of my new trike!  So .... busy, busy, busy

Hi folks the wife has been researching my family tree and has managed to get back all the way to 1066 william 1 !!!! she has been doing it for the last 4-5 yrs so its taken a while  but she really fancies doing it for a living as it would enable her to work from home and be around for the nipper when he goes to school etc, do you think it would be a sucsess ? testing the water i guess all comments greatly recieved  :-/ :-/ Cheers Rob

As said, it takes a LOT of time, I started looking, but soon found a distant cousin who had done it all back to the 1700s

also it costs a fortune to join all the places, to look online,
it would be worthwhile for the people who dont have the time.
