transferring a private plate

I have a valuable private plate on my classic car, the car is 40 years old and has been owned by my father for 22 years.

Due to an autobox Leak (pretty bad) I cant get it mot'd. is there any way of transferring the plate without one?

i have a buyer for the car but wont let it go with the plate under any circumstances.

yeah been through that, but it didnt answer my queries, so phoned dvla, and as suspected I need and Mot and tax,  >:(

Looks like ill have to go speak to a nice mot man and see if he wil take a backhander  ;D

You dont need either to put a plate on retention.

According to the nice man at dvla i do, and ive been down my local mot place, friendly chap said a few years ago no problem to write me an mot for this purpose (providing I destroy the mot afterwards) but because the car has been out of commision for so long and being a classic, it has to be the local VOSA station that tests it.

so im screwed unless I fix the auto box.

In this case, the plate in question is the originally allocated plate to the vehicle and not one added afterwards, thus an MOT is required....

The plate is a private  3 numbers followed by 3 letters type, not the original that came with the car. the original plate was an old "H" plate.

Retention also required MOT cert....

Could you take it down on a trailer after cleaning up the box, and roll it on to the ramps for the MOT, does the cae actually have to drive on to the ramp and be drivable to pass an MOT?  Trying to help find a way round it as it seems obvious the car wont be driven after passing the MOT as it is only being done to transfer the plate.

The car has to drive to get it out of the rolling road that they use for testing the brakes, already asked that one, anyways as its not the local mot guy its irrelevant, I dont see VOSA having any leaniency (um thats how its spelt innit?)
