Gatsos
« on: 14 October 2010, 21:15:13 »

Just out of interest - No! I haven't been zapped  ;D  ;D - but what exactly are the lines on the road just after a Gatso used for? They resurfaced a road on the way to work a few weeks back, & although the rest of the white lines have been replaced, the lines for the Gatso haven't. Does this mean I can do more than 30mph without a NIP through the door .... not that the thought would ever enter my head  ::)  ::)  ::)

Was always under the impression that the gatso's have to have the lines so the camera peps can tell exactly how fast you were going!! ;D

They are speed calibration lines Andy, so no lines = no ticket as the camera is effectively uncalibrated :y

No lines it can't work, the same is true if you drive over the middle of the road, for example not on the white lines or so I'm told  ::)

Those Gatso cameras are not as fancy as they like us to believe, all tickets generated by those kind must be manually checked and the lines counted, as they can work out your rough speed with them. As phil says no lines no ticket as they cannot see if the camera was right.

Exactly right. That is why they take 2 pictures one second apart, each line represents 5 miles per hour so doing 30 you should only have covered 6 lines in a second.

NOT TRUE at all ;-)

The lines are digitally lengthened left to right so that they can still calculate your actual speed.. If this was true EVERYONE would be driving in the middle of the road, lol

I use a nice little hidden device called the CHEETAR, this is a internal rear view mirror that clips over my exsiting mirror and it detects Speed cameras, it is amazing how many are actually turned off ;-)

Even if there aren't lines on the road the GATSO will record the measured speed from its' doppler radar. The lines are only there as a double check for borderline cases.

In addition, if there are no lines on the road, other markings can still be picked up. Distance between the cats' eyes, cracks in the paving slabs, whatever. If they are determined enough they'll send someone out with a tape measure. ;D

So .. the only solution is to always be going fast enough that you don't even appear in the second photo (what was it, 174mph or something?)  ;D
