My series of threads on Heavy Engineering now must include the tremendous achievement of over 14 years to drill the World's longest railway tunnel:

This is some engineering development that has come a long way since navvies using picks and shovels, with a bit of TNT, built the tunnels of the 19th century!

Fantastic piece on the news with the enourmous drilling machine breaking through, the workmen didn't flinch as tonnes of rock fell a few metres in front of them

investing in the railways as always.
as a youth, we took a european rail pass for a fixed fee.purchased a 1" thick railway book with routes and times.
once on the "mainland" everthing run as to book.
getting out of the uk by rail was the biggest problem.

The way things are going in the EU, I think people will be wanting to get INTO Switzerland!!

I seem to recall reading that the authorities there are somewhat draconian and have had a complete sense of humour bypass. :-/

I would be one of them.  The Swiss are a well armed people who have invested much in establishing a sensible defence policy.
