Just started getting back to my guitar, which is electric.

However, would like to also get an electric acoustic / acoustic.  Don't want to pay mega bucks for one, but neither want a cheap laminated type one.

Anyone out there advise on a good model of guitar to buy, and what sort of mid-price range expected to pay.

I dont know too much about prices these days, but I know Takamine are very popular :-/.I could ask a certain George Lowden, but even at mates rates his instruments are still several thousand quid.

I would tend to buy a guitar based upon having an idea what sounds I was hoping to be able to play. Are you into rhythm only or after doing jazzy stuff/folk picking?

A semi? are you looking to record yourself/play though an amp?
I would tend to buy a guitar based upon having an idea what sounds I was hoping to be able to play. Are you into rhythm only or after doing jazzy stuff/folk picking?.

Not really aiming to go down a particular style of music, so looking at all styles.
Yes will be doing some of my own recordings, as have a 4-track recorder, and the amp idea will be useful if I can get a few friends together for bit of a jamming session later on if we can all get ourselves sorted.

Yamaha APX range are worth a look. Not too bulky but still a nice rich sound when used 'un-plugged'.

I'd advise a trip to your local music shop to try out a few before deciding on any particular make and ideally try out the actual one you intend buying. 

There are donkeys to be had, even in the high-end makes. I had a Takamine that cost me over £600 about 15 years ago that sounded flat even with new strings. Tried all sorts to get it right, but it was having none of it. Must have been a 'friday afternoon' jobbie as Takamine are usually excellent guitars.

Take it that as you have an electric, youre looking for an acoustic that you can play through an amp as opposed to a semi hollow body electric like the gibsons the jazz guys like? If this is the case Id look at the ovation applause . Got mine second hand for about £100. The bowl is quite deep and , if youre not sitting down to play, might take a bit of getting used to but the tone is spot on. TBH, rarely use it through the amp as prefer the tone just as an acoustic. Like any acoustic you need to hear them first hand for yourself as no two are really alike so suggest you trawl your local music shops. If youre too embarrased to play them in front of the staff yourself get them to give you a demo so you can hear what it sounds like (though this wont of course give you a feel for the action ). web wise, have always found Dolphin music very helpful and reasonably priced. Personally , if I had the money , id have a whole range of guitars for different types of music but guess im just being greedy! I also believe that you should learn on an acoustic because theyre less forgiving and your electric playing will improve because of it. Besides, its nice to alternate between some classical or fingerpicking piece and then blast out some overdriven angst on the electric

I find the neck of an Ovation is better if you're more used to solid body 'electric' guitars, but they can be a bit awkward to play whilst seated. Particularly the 'shallow bowl' jobbies.
They have a tendancy to slip, due to the 'bowl shaped' back.
They've tried to reduce this by giving the rear a slightly rough or raised finish, but they still need a strap in my experience.   

Edit: Yep, Dolphin Music are a tidy bunch.

In fact I want to get rid of the 12 string as I play it so rarely now

know what you mean Pitchfork, I treated myself to a Ricky 360 12 string years ago and its a truly lovely guitar but whilst it comes into its element on certain songs (eg the typical jangly mcguin/harrison stuff) its hardly as versatile as my strat.and consequently doesnt get used that much.That said, Id never get rid of her!

jack socket-sadly the most common problem on the strat. I have to loop the lead up over the back strap button for mine to work without either a load of crackling or else frequent cut outs. Only because im a lazy git and cant be bothered to pull it all apart and get the soldering iron out again though
