Petition for Sergeant Matthew Telford. RIP.
« on: 01 December 2010, 12:00:39 »

Sergeant Matthew Telford of the Grenadier Guards was promoted to that rank in June 2009.
In November of that same year, Sergeant Telford was one of 5 British soldiers killed when a rogue Afghan policeman opened fire on them.
His wife and family will only receive a Corporal's pension since he only held his rank of Sergeant for less than a year.
However, he was killed on operations by the enemy whilst wearing three stripes of a Sergeant on active service.
Please sign the petition below to support a change in the rules that deny a hero’s widow the pension she deserves.

I've seen a similer case before, I know in this case its not fair but you have to do 2 years in rank to get the pension for the rank, it was the same for the Defence Attache in Greece who was assissinated in Athens 10 years ago he was acting Brigadier at the time and his widow only got a Col's pension, and the MOD would not change the rules.

If he was selected for promotion in Jun 09 and killed in Nov 09 he was probadly only acting Sgt, as you get selected for promotion and then you get 1 year to do the relevent course's to get substansive rank.

I would sign but current job forbids, sorry

I can understand the rules, they are no problem in peace time. But surely when they give thier lives for their country then rules need to bend.

I Fully Agree, I'm a Sgt currently serving, but if they changed the rules it would open the flood gates for lots of other claims.

trouble is, they'd be open to hundreds of back claims from widows/widowers in similar circumstances....I don't know how many servicemen and women are within the 2 year "transition" period, but I'd imagine quite a high percentage - that said, give me a choice between finding taxpayers money for service pensions or bailing out bankers and I know what side I'm on :o
