Just had a thought (Snow related)
« on: 01 December 2010, 22:34:36 »

Why can we not get around? this is 2010 and this country used to have winters like this on a regular basis....

Are out cars part of the problem?  to powerful, great big wide tyres????    As a child I remember 1965 and for weeks piles of snow at the side of the road from the snow ploughs but clear roads.......Discuss

Just lots more vehicles than then. Oh, and the great  M25 jam last night (which meant drivers were stranded for up to 6 hours or more) was caused by just ONE overturned HGV. In the old days, they would have got a local farmer to right the Ford Thames Trader with his tractor and everyone would just carry on.  ;) ;D

This is the point that bugs me, council person on the new said something to the effect that it was unexpected.... >:(  We have had it for a week, was forecast and still is daily and roads are appalling and side roads not touched at all. I hope to get to work tomorrow, but even if I do I will not do any visits as estates are terrible.... >:( >:(

Just sheer number of cars - in the 1960s they were able to plough the resources into bus routes and keep them running. Even in the 1963 freeze I remember taking my sledge on the bus to some fantastic hills and spent all day there.

Everyone was happy to use public transport because there was a regular and effective system.

But the argument today is that you need cars to drive over the salted roads for it to work.... in 1965 I lived in a small village in South Yorks, everyone traveled by car or bus to work and school. I now live is a small village in Durham where everyone has to travel by car or bus. In those days most families had 1 car now it is 2 so why are we worse off.....?

I think the thing that cracked me up about all this so far was someone from some government body on the radio this morning:

"Well you see the problem is, Winter in Britain is so unpredictable, we rarely get weather like this which makes it hard to plan for"

Erm.. I seem to remember weather like this in February. And a bit like that in December before that. And the winter before that. And the winter b... you get the idea.  ::)

I know, this country is a joke.  It's not like it was a suprise it was going to snow ffs.  Saw my first gritter today on the M3 so that's where England's one and only rather gritter truck is yet all the while we have dozens of people employed in councils on pop-star wages doing no-jobs  >:(

Totally agree.

Also this is the time of year I would have all the crime offenders out clearing the paths at 6 am to work thier commumty hours off.

It's times like this that doctors and local district nurses, care workers etc carry on regardless to help the ill and the aged.  I have heard locally that because they cant get about by car they have taken to travelling by foot and in some cases the snow is past thier knee's and up to thier bums, but am sure it's the same case up and down the country.

They all get my vote.   :y
