I'm currently owner of a R reg 2.0GLS meggie (first one)which recently overheated and therefore require cylinder head to be reconditioned.  I'm trying to decide whether if it will be worth it.

fitted new clutch about 1k miles ago
timing belt changed - performed about 2-3k miles over approximately 2.5 years.
Water pump and thermostat changed same time as timing belt.
may need to change crank and cam shaft sensors and radiator with this job.  Can get parts from ebay reasonably priced.

However, my worry is passing Mot as lots of white smoke emitted and therefore concerned cat is damaged.

I have been looking for another 2.0 - 2.2 meggie to replace it where it has less miles and shell not too bad.

What are anyones thought on this matter.

Another, newer, miggy will cost little more than keeeping your current one going, especially if the cats and HG have gone!

for the garage price of the repair you can get a decent f/l  CD or CDX model omega. unless you are emotionally attached to your car like I am to mine

If you are going to fix yourself, not a massive job. If you are paying someone else to fix it, its probably uneconomical....

agreed  are you able to do the work yourself   me personally would have a go hate to see cars broken up  and theres plenty of good advice and help on oof

Thanks to all input. 

I was quoted £200 labour (private job)
I estimate further £300 appx to get all other bits and to make it road legal ie tax/mot.

diy considered.  it would be biggest job attempted but was advised tensioners etc difficult to get right.   how true is that?

Replacing a head is not difficult. Getting it reworked is not bad, lots of small engineering shops around. I got 4 valves fitted and ground in plus another head cleaned for £50, and he does a skim for £25.

Fitting the head, well it makes sense to fit a new timing belt kit, AND WATER PUMP. Its not difficult, getting the tensioner right is a doddle, basically line everything up, fit the new bits, stick an allen key in the tensioner and turn till it reads New, then tighten up the tensioner.

I would emphasise changing all the timing bits, eg tensioner plus pulleys, PLUS WATER PUMP. My water pump shaft broke after 50K miles, the belt came off and bent 4 valves. 

There is a DVD available on changing the timing belt and tensioners.

Buying another car, well there are some bargains about, but better the devil you know ....

You may buy one, travel a mile down the road, and if it hasn't been serviced properly, the timing belt could go and you are back where you started.

I think burning oil is often due to the valve stem oil seals going. Not a horrible job to do, you have to get the valve spings out to get at them. Fairly cheap to buy new, an ebay seller called Trechii sells a full set of 16 for about £10. As far as smoke, could that be water vapour ?. Migs tend to produce a fair bit of water vapour when running.

I checked my head by putting a straight edge across at different positions and seeing if a 2thou feeler would go in. It didn't so I assumed the head was OK. It all depends on how hot the engine got when it ran out of water.

You might consider buying a head from a scrap yard. trouble with that is you don't know what state its, it could be worse than yours.

To get an idea, how about Googling "engine remanufacturers + your town "  and giving them a call and asking for the price of a skim and doing the stem oil seals. An avantage of getting them to redo the head for you is if one (or more!) of the manifold studs shear, you can get them to replace them at the same time. You will need a gasket set, new head bolts, new timming belt kit AND WATER PUMP, reasonable set of tools and somewhere warm and dry.
