A friend of mine bought one these over xmas on my recoomendations, His kit is somewhat different to mine (about 6 months old), did they change the spec of whats inside?

His newer set has a red box of bits, allen key set and some rachect spanners, where as mine has pretty much every thing else apart from this but mine has a lot more heavy duty type Torx / Star rackect bits, a full box length worth.

Whats in your new, old sets, just interested, before He takes His one back and moans at them!

yeah, changed about 18 months ago (yours must have been old stock).

Same pieces, though the newer ones have the 3/8" screwdriver, allen and torx bits as bits for the screwdriver instead. Probably a more useful setup, but I prefer the 'old' ones

Ok, thanks TB, the newer set, all the bits in the red box and the allen keys just seem a bit flimsy, racket spanners could be usefull though, like you think I prefer the old type set.

I have one of each set - the red box of bits is a pain in the rear, try and get a bit out with even slightly oily hands, they are jammed in so tight i have to get them out with pliers!!  Old set gets my preference

downside of older set is the stupid philips/flat/posidrive bits that don't fit the screwdriver, and you have to put on a 3/8" rachet...  ...so 6 of 1, half dozen of other really

This is in my Halfords for £89.99, my old set is still fine mind you, although I do like the look of the new bits  :-/

I got one a few weeks ago.  The TC applies to the list price, not the sale price, apparently.

I saved a whole 3p, I think it was.  Whether it was bought on TC/list price, or the actual sale price on the day, I cant recall....

The Trade price brings it down to about the sale price (£100).  The £89 offer has ended, its back to its 'sale' price of £99. Anyone who ever pays £199 for it hasn't got all their dogs on one lead.

Its a decent set, but never pay more than £100 for one. And keep the receipt - some branches insist on this for the lifetime warranty...

Having had a close look at the contents, there is virtually nothing I haven't already got in smaller sets, so can't really justify buying it just to have it all in one box, much as I love buying new tools. I've just rung 'Tools Anonymous' and they've talked me out of it. 8-)

this is a serious question from someone who has no experience of tool quality/requirements, but i'm about to buy this one at the end of the week, and granted its not as portable, but what are the pro's and con's between the two??

To be blunt I've always found you get what you pay for.  The set above wont be very good for working on cars as the bits in it just don't have the strength and there's no torx bits so no good for the omega. both of which are a lot stronger  and more portable  add a set of pliers and you have most of things in the set you listed.
As said my opinion.   Go instore and check the quality you'll see what i mean.

was looking at this set myself and thought quite reasonable, but after reading reviews and considering my socket set, although much smaller, I decided it may be better to purchase some specialist tools required and purchase other bits/pieces I am currently missing.

My socket set and spanners are small but so far has been sufficient for the small task I currently carry out.  This is not to say in due course I will not invest appropriately.
