Hello, I've just got a new tv and it's got a socket where you can connect your pc.

My pc has a tv out socket and I've connected it all up. The tv knows it's connected but is receiving no signal. Does anyone know how I can get the signal activated to the tv? Thanks

Might have to flick through menu to find the right chanel,most tv's won't change inputs automatically

Thanks for replying but I've done that.

I've changed the input to pc and it knows it's connected but says no signal, so I'm thinking I have to do something on my laptop to activate the signal from the pc or something but don't know how!

in the graphics settings look for dual monitor, make of laptop and gfx may also help

The tv will become a 'second display'.....so, you`d need to configure it in the O/S display options.....doing so you can chose what is displayed, what size/aspect and even move things/objects from one display (desktop) to the other.
I tried it and the Tv wasn`t recognised automatically (under Vista) and lack of video-sound was an issue when viewing via the Tv monitor.
IIRC, switching back from watching via the Tv to watching via the lap-top monitor, caused some problems which I could only resolve with a reboot.:-/

Thanks everyone for your replies. Think I'll go back to my old fat tv. These new skinny ones are rubbish, the picture is weird and the sound is absolutely terrible. The tv out doesn't work and the tv is crap.

These companies just think of something else for us all to buy and tell us that we need it, when what we have is good enough if not better. Another waste of money

and the stupid thing doesn't even tell you what's on automatically like my digibox and fat tv does, and why when you get something brand new you still get one of those crappy remote controls that's about the size of a house brick and look about 50 million years old

Sounds like you've just bought a kak TV, or its not been setup right!

What leads are you using to connect the pc?
If you are using HDMi, it will automatically detect the laptop/pc, providing you turn your digibox/skybox off, if its sharing the same HDMi port.
If your using DVi, again, that should auto detect, but in this case, you must tell your pc to use the "2nd monitor" in the graphics display menu on your pc.
Regarding audio, I found that using HDMi, I have to change the sound setting on my laptop, telling it to send the audio via the HDMi, otherwise it will only come through your laptop. This will be found in the "sound" settings in the control panel.

Where's the graphics display menu? If it's in control panel I can't find it, although I am on xp anyway!

I've got a d-sub cable I think it's called. A blue plug with 15 pins that you have to screw in, like the really old printer cables. The tv knows it's there but says there is no signal. I assumed because I had a tv out socket it would work orbe activated but can't find the graphics display menu on pc.

As for the sound not being set up right, I don't think it's that. It's a samsung tv which I know is meant to be of reasonable quality but this is absolute cack. The speakers are at the back, and there is no bass response whatsoever resulting in an awful tinny sound that is unbearable, and due to the empty sound it is very hard to understand what people are saying. If you turn up the bass and/or the volume to only s third it results in clipping (commonly but incorrectly referred to as distortion). My old samsung fat tv is 10 times better than this. Im more of a sound than vision person, but this is absolutely atrocious and i just can't believe that a make, held in high regard such as samsung can sell this quality of stuff and think it's acceptable. What's worse is that people put up with it.

Well as it's a gift I'll have to try and get the receipt and take it back. Utter rubbish. Not only that i prefer the picture from my old tv.

Depending on what input you have on the tv the picture quality may not look that good but if you go through hdmi (HD) then it will improve no end.
I also have a samsung and after a few tweaks have got the sound coming out nicely. again it depends on the model. If you are more concerned with sound quality then it may be worth looking at surround sound

Oh yeah thanks I right clicked on the desktop got the menu up and it's gone straight to my tv! The taskbar is missing off the bottom though.

It's still going back, the quality of this thing is terrible.

I think surround sound is one of the worst things ever invented. I don't like it. It's far too loud and I feel sorry for all the people who live next to people with surround sound.

In any case, there is a surround 'feature' on this tv (it's a Samsung P2270HD), but the speakers are so tinny and rubbish, I'm so angry that they think it's acceptable to sell this kind of rubbish. No doubt it will be a battle to get a refund.

But having said that, if a product isn't upto standard, it is wrong to have to buy other things to make it acceptable

Clipping is correctly described as distortion.  In fact it is odd-harmonic distortion, primarily third harmonic.

I have a Samsung flat-panel tv and am not happy with it although I have decided to live with it for now.  It sometimes manages to get its Freeview decoder into a state where the sound is tinny and echoey.  A powerdown is needed to resolve this.

It is the second one I owned as I bounced the first one for vision problems but the replacement is the same.  CowboysTechnicians came and switched off Dynamic Contrast at the request of Samsung to minimise the vision fault.
Nuff said.

Hmm we now have an LCD TV.

It replaced a rather good CRT TV.

However it cost a lot so I did expect it to have a better picture and it does.

Sound - apart from TV I route via a HC receiver and HiFi speakers.
