The Microsoft warranty is 3 years although the shops only give 2 year and the option of extended warranty.
I only found this out when my sons xbox shop warranty was out I went onto the microsoft website and microsoft offer a free 3 year warranty as long as the void seal isn't damaged.
I filled a form out which asked for the serial number and which red lights were showing they paid for the postage both ways and 14 days later the xbox was back all free of charge.

3 lights constantly on? Ok this is going to sound odd, but it worked for me

There are two fans on the back of the xbox, find something to jam both, small screwdrivers or chop sticks work well, make sure both are jammed and won't move.

Now turn it on, wait until it 'clicks' as your forcing it into an over-heat. You want to wait until both right hand 'corners' of the circle begin to flash. Once the entire right hand side is flashing wait a further 30 seconds-minute, unplug all power, remove jamming agents, and boot!

Any 'home' fix is a temporary bodge, ultimately likely to do more damage than good. gayStation or seXBOX.

But if its fubar, wrap in blanket and switch on for a few hours trick may temporarily give it extra life.

Out of interest, on back of seXBOX is power requirements, what are these - wanting to know what 'generation' yours is for my own benefit (mine is 1st generation, I'm extpecting failure at any time )

Towel trick is strongly advised against on most sites, and only proper fix seems to be re heat sincking, weather at home or via MSoft. Given the price and it being out of warranty I reckon it's worth DIY if I can suss it.

1st gen, like mine, most prone to overheat. Note, the one I bought from Tesco last year (and returned because of it) was 1st gen!!

DIY, you cannot reflow solder properly. Hence overheating tricks to try to partially melt solder thats there. Different heatsink/clamps are purely an attempt to better clamp the CPU/GPU chips to board.

Xbox is some silver compound stuff, didn't see any heat needed.  :-?

And clamping - sounds like broken solder as well.

If so - got a plastic welder here and it has already revived a YLOD PS3, however it really needs reballing for a permanent fix.

Does he do reballing?

The PS3 I revived lasted 4 months when so called professionally reflowed.

Is this related to the cutting back of leaded solder?

Any manufacturing facility, whether contracted to Fony, MS, Dell, HP et al, should have got to grips with lead-free by now - its not like its something new any more.

I did the X-clamp and re-paste on mine about 2-3 yrs ago and its never missed a beat since ... seems to be hit and miss but touch wood mine has been fine

Tried Tunnies trick, made no odds. :-/

None of the xbox fixes I've seen involve any soldering, it's all to do with the x plates and paste etc...

However I am wondering if that's the issue with mine at all? The lights come on from the outset, the moment it's turned on, so it has no time to get warm, and are now constantly flashing. Add in that there is no picture, the screen is black, and that there where some visual disturbances previously with sequential dots and lines running vertically up the screen followed by a frozen picture.
Just wondering if it's more to do with the av out?

i had the ring of death on mine and all i did was strip it down, gave it a good clean with a soft brush, gentle wipe over the laser with lint cloth, put it back together and works fine.  did same with a friends and that worked as well
