My grandchildren, nieces and nephews have tried to convince me to get a video cam and sign up to Skype.

Any for's and against's?

What sort of video cam do I need (cheap).

any cam usb type, head phones and a mic, then there is the setting up. sound and mic setup, if using laptop needs doing if not using mic and cam as laptops now days have build in, and can get a echo. may be more but set mine up that way and works fine.

I use it regularly, the wife calls the inlaws on it and if you want to call abroad to family who aren't pc literate you can call a landline at a lot cheaper price.
as regards webcam they are cheap enough I wouldn't spend more than £20 odd

I recommend at least a 1.3 mega pixel camera though

As regards headset I bought a Primal gaming headset which is good but no longer on sale from play.com but headsets are worth spending a couple of quid more on but if you have a microphone and headphones/speakers already they work just as well and skype is easy to tweak mic settings.

A cheap method for calls, I used it years ago on my phone when in New York to call home for free! (Skype to Skype calls cost nothing) So when on WiFi on my phone, free calls home  ;D

Its an average service, the software is getting very bloated, but its fairly easy to use & setup.

Don't rely on it though, its no exactly reliable

I think they are trying to offload it, but nobody wants it!

Why bother with the webcam though, just use voice.


AA - if you want a webcam, I'm sure I have a spare here if ever you're blasting down M1/M40

Families want webcams especially where children/grandchildren are present.

I used it when it first came out and only had a 600k cable modem connection. It was great. Now (a lifetime later) I use it to try and speak to my folks in England. My Orange connection is very third world but the other end isn't much better despite being a so called 2 meg service. Last night we averaged 2 orange bar strength. That is without using cameras at each end.

Alright for free but I wouldn't pay any money at all for the service.
