Just got my renewal quote this morning for my 2.2 Mig.

I'm not a young driver, full protected NCB's, don't live in a city.
They know about car having some very mild cosmetic items added, such as a rear spoiler, mv6 wheels, and lowered suspension.  Last year got a very reasonable quote fully Comp.
Not so good this year, almost doubled and they must be dreaming to, as they've quoted me just under a Grand even though earned another claim free year   .

Thank goodness I went and got an Admiral quote, a staggering £700 cheaper even with the modifications  .

Twice I've gone with RAC in the past, first year reasonable, the following year they feel they have the urge to double my premium  :-?.

I think they all try it on hoping you can't be bothered to phone around. I move insurance every year, if they can't be bothered to give me their best price then they're not doing their jobs properly

Aviva tried that with me; I shopped about and got insured elsewhere, for less than half the cost of their renewal.

The 'big name' insurance companies always seem to be able to "have their cake and eat it".

It winds me up when they phone you asking if your going to take the renewal, when you say no you've got it half the price they say oh we can do it at that price, make my blood boil

I agree.  I say "I don't work that way.  If you can't give me a good price first time I'm not interested."

Strangely enough - Aviva and RAC are part of the same conglomeration. One year I ended up changing from one to the other and then back again the following year.
This year - just renewed (Jan 6th 2011 to be precise) with Aviva - no where else could come close by nearly £300 - ridiculous AND it still went up nearly 100 quid - full ncd, protected, Business Cat A, Windscreen, Comp + Wife as named driver + up to 40k miles a year.... just under 400 quid.....

As I have often stated, I am with the AA who continually get me a new policy yearly which is no dearer than the previous year.  In fact this year my premium went down by £50

Unfortunately the AA use a randomometer to set their quotes, I think.. You're either a risk they really, really like, or you're not..

The last quote I had from them was £3000 more than the next most expensive... No, that's not one too many zeroes

Absolutely, my previous insurer tried to almost double my renewal quote, (had been with them for 4 years) and I found a cheaper quote. When I informed my insurer I was moving to the new one as they were 60% cheaper, they offered to match the other quote, 'as I was a valued customer'. 
My reply was, 'If I was such a valued customer, why wasn't I given the lower quote first time?'
Needless to say, both the cars are now with the new insurer....   serves the old company right for trying to con me.

Precisely. And this applies to evryone, not just insurers.  Energy companies seem to be as bad

Seems I'm not the only one who's suffered the Insurance attempt to "rip a customer off" then.  And what with other companies doing the same, what the hell's going on in this country now-a-days ??. 

Well RAC will be losing out on my breakdown cover also when it runs out.  Won't be going with AA either, as they tried it on with the 'breakdown' side of things with me couple of years ago.

I've been with Tesco for two years (2nd car discount too) which was backed out to Green Flag - now I'm with Green Flag directly and they've never let me down yet - and unfortnately I've needed them three times with my Omega .. admittedly once was a puncture on the motorway - no way was I going to sit with my back to lane 1 changing a wheel at rush hour near High Wycombe  ).
Good value - no frills and keeps a local outfit in business too.....

I do the same each year and bounce between Admiral and Elephant.  The irony is they will nick each other's business despite being part of the same parent company.  They can see the competing quote you've put together with the other company on their systems and then they just offer to match it...
