Cataract Surgery
« on: 04 February 2011, 13:15:23 »

Does anyone one here at OOF have experience of cataract surgery?

About two years ago I noticed that the vision in my right eye was starting to deteriorate. A visit to the optician followed by a subsequent visit to the eye hospital confirmed that a cataract was the cause.

During a painless ten minute procedure my old "cloudy" lens was removed and a new intraocular lens  (implant) took it's place. Excellent vision was restored.

However...for some unknown reason my low light/night vision is now quite poor...(much worse than before surgery.... :'( :'() This makes driving at night far more difficult.

I now face a dilemma. My left eye also needs cataract surgery . I'm concerned that if my low light/night vision is as poor as in my right eye then I may not be able to drive in the dark at all.....Hmmm....choices....choices....

Equally, without surgery your vision may become so bad you are unable to drive at all :-/ :-/

Tricky position to be in Opti but I think you know the correct answer already, you just want opinions... Personally I'd have to get it done, otherwise I wouldn't be able to enjoy Skruntie's frequent postings ::) ::)

I know nothing ... but this article implies the loss of night vision is NOT linked to the cataract operation .. perhaps you should speak to an Opthalmic Specalist rather than second guessing ...  :(

The loss of night vision may be totally unrelated and indicative of some other problem.

Just my thoughts .. nowt else .. :(

I did ask if perhaps there were other reasons for my poor night vision.

After a raft of ophthalmic tests I have been assured that my eyes are perfectly healthy. There is absolutely no evidence of glaucoma or macular degeneration... :y

Would glasses or contacts not cure this?
I remember when i had an eye test about 2 years ago....i couldnt read a map book when it was dark, with only the interior light on....i was prescribed reading glasses..which has sorted my problem out ...but i do remember the optician asking if i had problems driving at night....which i dont....but which sorta implied....i might have needed other glasses  :-/

Maybe visit an optician and explain the suituation, see what they say  :y

Sorry. The wife has been on the keyboard.

Anyway, my Father had cataract surgery a few weeks ago and 20 odd years ago his Father had the same procedure. Next time I manage to speak to him without it breaking into a full blown argument within two minutes I'll ask him if he or Grandad suffered with any night vision problems and report back.

Hi i've had the cataract removed from my left eye five years now.A corrective lens was fitted on the cornea to correct my vision. The reason is,there was from an accident and the cataract developed over twenty or so years, that eye is better than the right ,and it all was done under local in thirty minuits :o ;) ;) :y
