A closing post
« on: 06 February 2011, 19:52:53 »

This is offered as a closing post on climate/environmentalism, as it is clear that some members and admins find it tedious to have to read my posts, or simply feel that they get in the way of the Lads Mags/X factor posts. Those that do read my posts them seem to be divided into: those hell-bent on name-calling (swivel-eyed, right-wing, nut-job denier) and those who simply tell me that I don’t know what I’m talking about without providing any evidence to back up their claims. Of course, there are a few who agree with me and have supported me, and to those I extend my humble gratitude.

My reason for posting these threads (and bear in mind that I didn’t even start the Horizon or Climate Sceptics threads!) is that I believe that is incumbent upon someone to demonstrate that this issue has huge implications for us all. Of course, I don’t mean the climate, but rather the manner in which what I believe to be false claims will be used by existing and future administrations. For example, a cross-party panel of MPs has recommended the adoption of TEQs (Transferable Energy Quotas), which will be given weekly to every adult in the country and will need to be surrendered every time you fill the car, pay a gas bill and, probably, take a foreign holiday.  Essentially, energy rationing.

http://witteringwitney.blogspot.com/2011/02/scam-begats-scam.html

Interestingly, they note that there will be no great contribution from alternative energy sources, and that coal powered stations will be closed and essentially not replaced.  Nuclear energy, then? Nope. On page 37, they say that nuclear stations may well be bad for the climate and, anyway, they point to ‘dwindling uranium resources’ thus underlining their desire not to have them.

So, they say we will not get any new power and we shall have to struggle on with what we’ve got. Which means rationing. As I can’t see any other countries following this route, I feel that they would, if they had the opportunity, commit the UK to a dark and bleak future.

Now, all this is based on IPCC Reports, which many scientists have routinely debunked. Yet, the reports are still used to prop-up radical plans like the TEQs.

Since I believe much of the global warming fear mongering to be baseless, I find it hard to accept that my children will grow up in a country which is, at best, a third-world shadow of its former self.

It strikes me that many, perhaps too many, on this forum would rather let the politicians get on with it and, like sheep, follow them into a most uncertain future. I say that such an attitude is more likely to bring about this ruination. You can be sure, though, that were they to be forced to sell their Omega, have fewer showers, and live in a chilly house in order to save enough energy quotas to take their kids for a week in Spain, they would be rather put out, to say the least. However, I believe that such a situation is not impossible. It is a situation that is made more possible by people ignoring the onward march of the green movement.

So that is why I have posted climate threads on here. It is clear, as I noted earlier, that others do not share my views. That’s fine by me, though I could do without their nastiness. In time, I believe that my view will be proved to be largely correct. I trust we still have an industrial country by then.

I do not wish to be part of a forum where I have to think twice about posting lest someone may consider it boring. Neither would I wish to continually defend my posts.

I have therefore decided to withdraw from posting any climate threads, as a precursor to leaving the forum entirely.

Should any member wish to contact me away from the forum, they can send me a PM request for an email contact.

I am sorry to have been such an obvious burden to the admins. :-[

damn!! you give up to easily!! yes some of your posts i didnt read but others I mostly agreed with to be honest!! besides which sometimes its good to read things totally unrelated to cars, why not try the simple way and rather than just do a long post on a particular subject, ak a question on this subject? then when however many have expressed an interest post it? if no interest then dont?
no point in leaving a forum you obviously enjoy being on

As I will be seen as the catalyst in this, I would say that posting about something close to your heart is one thing, but perhaps overposting to the verge of tedium for most other folks is another?  I did not say stop posting, merley suggested that the thing has been done to death thus far and that perhaps its time to draw breath and find something else for a while?

Your comments on here are appreciated, irrespective of how you read my postings on the matter....  ;)

What have I missed now...

I'll be honest, I only read the 'current affairs' type threads if we get alerts, as they aren't really my scene here.  Being even more honest, I don't read many other threads in General Discussion, unless we get a complaint  :-[

I don't recall having to moderate one of your posts - its possible I have, but I don't recall it. If I did, its because in my opinion, it was needed for the 'good' of the site.

Some people may enjoy your musings on politics and climate. Some people may enjoy Skruntie's photos. Some may enjoy Banjax's anti coalition posts. Some may enjoy STM0123's brash posts. Some may even enjoy my (hopefully come across as light hearted) rants.

The fact is, away from Omegas, we have different subjects that interest us - and those that don't, hopefully we can just simply ignore (going by the thread title).

We need the diverse range of posts. At the same time, we need some balance - a few months ago, the first page of threads in general discussion were all political threads.

Who knows, at some point in the not to distant future, we may be able to more easily have sub sections for those interested in such subjects (and there seems to be a number that are).

Now, TB goes off to see what kicked this off....

I personally feel that it would be a great loss to the forum if you werent contributing Nick. There are very few people with real intelligence who post on here (no offence intended) and whether or not people agree with your viewpoint, Im sure most would agree that it certainly generates debate.
I dont think it is just climate which turns some people off, but politics as a whole, which was why I was going to suggest to the Mods that they consider (possibly for a trial period) a politics sticky, which would include climate debate.
I know TBhates stickies, and Im not keen on them myself, but it might be worth a try.
I was also going to suggest merging gen discussion and car chat back into one section, as I feel it may have been a bit divisive. :-/

personally i think you're way off base on the whole debate, as time will no doubt prove.  :y

you're obsessed with it tho - thats why its so easy for things to get heated i reckon, there never really been a debate, just endless point scoring on both sides with no one ever going to change their opinion.

if the admins dont like it, dont have a general chat section then....or dont read the climate posts and we'll all promise to behave  ;)

but Nick, i'm waiting for the day you're posting from a dinghy several feet above the thames flood barrier - you cant deny us that by bailing out now  ;D

and I've yet to read a boring Nickbat post to be honest............

cept this one of course  ;) :y

We may have other options, but I'm paranoid at breaking the forum (technically), so not in a position currently to implement.  Not sure a sticky would work for that, as the scope for confusion (multiple debates in one thread) would likely start a 'handbags at dawn' moment.

The Admin Team have been discussing this, and agreed it probably was a mistake to split. But its dependent on me finding time to write a script to merge them.  And my time is a huge problem  :-[

Well we're really setting the world to rights tonight are'nt we? I know i've had a pop at you in the past regarding some of your posts. You are obviously a knowledgeable sort of chap whereas i lack the patience & interest to delve as deeply into some topics as you do. I do however learn by my mistakes....to a degree & am glad we made our peace.

Then, if you don't want to discuss climate, don't read....

I for one appreciate your posts Nick. I have come out of virtual retirement to comment on this. You have supplied many interesting posts and links to sites that many people would like buried.

This site will be worse off without you. Just take a few days off the forum and hopefully you will come back refreshed.
