For about 10 years I've been paying for broadband through Tesco.net (I know - no comments please).

To solve my e-mail address problem, I've signed up to Tesco Broadband and Phone package, saving myself about £30 per month, with the added bonus of the fastest broadband I can receive in my area.

I was assured that I could keep my, and Mrs AA's e-mail addresses, so that solved a problem of not having to notify everyone in our address books of a change of e-mail address.

Thereby we have hit on a problem, as we have now signed up to tesco.com, different to tesco.net, we can receive e-mails through MS Outlook, but not send, to send we have to log onto tesco.net, and send e-mails from there, thus having no facility to forward or reply to e-mails from Outlook, most inconvenient!.

Bear with me, if I sign upto Gmail, which you can configure Outlook to send and receive, and I configure tesco.net to forward e-mails to gmail, then, in theory, we can reply to e-mails through Outlook, all be it the received e-mail will be from our tesco.net address, and the reply will be from our gmail address.

Can anyone see any problems with that please?

may even be easier than that....sure gmail have settings to pull in mail from other providers for you.

Assuming tesco.com have an smtp server, why not configure outlook to send via tesco.com (smtp) and receive via tesco.net (pop3). Set your email addy within outlook to be your outlook.net, then it will appear your emails are coming from tesco.net, even tho they are being sent via tesco.com.

Get a gmail account, and tell everyone.

continue to receive tesco's, and on receipt of everything you want, tell them youve changed.  soon be free to use whatever isp you want in the future, with no email issues.

short term pain, long term gain.

ive done it, know many others have done it, its a natural progression from the 'old ways' of ISP based mail.

with Gmail and using IMAP not POP things get even easier, any of my devices see all my mail, read on one, and it auto gets marked read on them all, the lot access the server and its all sync'd

Actually, are you sure tesco.com doesnt use tesco.net...and tesco.net isnt just not working at the moment.....

Reason, i say....is i was just on tesco.com website....hovered mouse over internet services.....and the link pointed to tesco.net......however if i clicked on it i got 'page cannot be displayed'....  :-/

No, checked with them, they have no exchange server.

It's a problem they are working on, and will provide the service at a future date.

Exchange server? No ISP would use Exchange Server due to costs.


As Jimbob says, I would take the ISP out of the equation completely, either by using the likes of Gmail, or getting your own domain, or a combination (you can get Gmail to handle mail for your domain). Slowly abandon the old email address.

I read that here Tesco use the O2 web server:

Seem to recall that O2's smtp server can be used from anywhere if you use authentication.

All of this sounds jolly complicated. I signed uo for my @ btinternet.com ten years ago. Never felt the need to change it.
I've read about people getting cheaper internet deals, then saying how rubbish they are and can't wait to change back. These companies undercut each other on a regular basis and  you usually end up chasing your tail.


Same with gas and electricity.
