Murdoch to own F1 ?
« on: 19 April 2011, 21:10:31 »

Sky news is reporting that Newscorp. is putting together a bid to buy F1 from the private equity firm which currently owns it.
Pay per view F1 on the horizon ?
How can someone "own" a sport. Does anyone own football/cricket/tennis etc ?

Bernie knows the value of having F1 free to air - you cant put a price on that for the sponsors  :y

You may be right, but it will be interesting to see who wins the battle of the financial giants between the two of them. I would imagine unle Rupert will be intending to take complete control - and Bernie will be intending to retain. it.
Cant see it being good for the "sport" whatever happens.

Also read this:

German state prosecutors have confirmed to BBC Sport that they have questioned Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone as part of a probe into an alleged multi-million pound bribery scandal.

The authorities are trying to establish who paid around $50m to Gerhard Gribkowsky, a former banker who oversaw F1's sale to private equity firm CVC in 2006.

This would kill F1 as the sponsors would pull out

I wouldn't be surprised if Bernie planted the story himself to float the idea and see if he can leverage any more money out the current TV rights  ;D

He would say that though. Word on the grapevine is that it will be up for auction within a couple of years and Rupert is getting his bid ready. ;)

Hes a businessman, so he isnt just going to put it on exclusive pay per view immediately,  but he might ressurect Bernies pay per view idea with HD and in the long term he would want exclusive pay per view, the same as he wants for all major sport - and probably all TV ultimately.

I would not subscribe.

If TV went beyond the licence fee I'd just not watch.
