Ants!!!
« on: 15 April 2011, 21:40:38 »

Noticed just one the other day on the kitchen work surface. Over the last few days, though, the number has increased exponentially. I think they may have a nest under the wooden threshold of the patio windows, but I can't get that up without a lot of hassle. Plus, I don't want to use anything that may be dangerous to our lab...who'll eat anything (including the ants, when the appear near him!). ;)

Has anyone any practical tips?  I want to stop this invasion in its tracks.

They seem to have an aversion to boiling water. ;)

I could put the traps behind the plinths in the kitchen - out of reach of the lab. :)

So I'm told, if you get them in early enough, that'll be the last you see of the ants (this year) :)

Used to have a lot of problems with them in my last place - though having no pets meant I just liberally sprinkled Raid ant powder around all the skirting boards .. the flat looked like an explosion in a talc factory when I hoovered the remnants up with the Dyson, though  ;D

Nippon used to be the dogs danglies for ant control but over the last few decades they seem to have developed an immunity to it. As said if you can access the nest with copiouse amounts of boiling water that can do the trick. Another thing  is a product called Deathlac It is a residual pesticide that I have had success with.
I work in in the food industry so pest control is an important subject to me, and due to the fact that I don't have chocolate ants on my menu I don't want the little b"ggers in my kitchen!

I lived in Vietnam a while back on the 22nd floor of an apartment block and we had a serious ant problem in our kitchen....

We couldn't work out if they climbed the stairs, came up the rubbish chute or took the lift!!  ;D ;D ;D

I bought an electronic gadget called Pest-Stop.

Seems to work, had it about 2 years now.

While I was living in Vietnam a friend had a serious bike accident.  I went and visited her in the main public hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, where she was in A&E. The ward she was on had no aircon, so the windows were wide open and there were a few lazy ceiling fans. The ward was cramped and there were lots of people with horrible head injuries (No helmets!  :o).

My friend was doing OK, and luckily she couldn't see the thick column of black ants climbing up the wall just behind her head....

good bit of salt around where they're coming in will dry them up and bleach their trail, also clean all your surfaces well make a moat for the dog food and don't leave food scraps around no matter how small! and clean up all spills

Another Asian ant story.....

About 15 years ago I did abit of travelling around S.E.Asia and I was in Thailand staying in a 50p a night bamboo hut place on the beach... 8-)

So I'm stood barefoot on the grass chatting to a bird from London who'd just arrived, and I'm thinking that things are going pretty well, she seemed to like my wit and charm  ::) and seemed happy enough to let me 'show her around'  ;)

All of a sudden my feet are on fire!!  :o I look down and my feet are black with fire ants up to my ankles!!! and the more adventurous little blighters are rapidly heading north to more sensitive climes!!  :o

I'm dancing around slapping at my feet and legs before sprinting into the sea where I remained until the pain had died down  :'( and the ants had gone  >:(

Sadly the bird from London didn't hang around to consol me.. :-[ :-[ :'( :'( :( :( I saw her a couple of times after and I was  :-[ :-[ :-[ and she  ;D ;D ;D
