A political (US) post. Ignore if not interested!
« on: 13 September 2011, 22:10:50 »

There is much chatter in the blogosphere about Sarh Palin's Iowa speech. I must admit that she is one of the few and, possibly, the only prominent political person who identifies the real problems in the US (and, as it happens, here in the UK).

She rightly rails against crony capitalism:

Yeah, the permanent political class – they’re doing just fine. Ever notice how so many of them arrive in Washington, D.C. of modest means and then miraculously throughout the years they end up becoming very, very wealthy? Well, it’s because they derive power and their wealth from their access to our money – to taxpayer dollars.  They use it to bail out their friends on Wall Street and their corporate cronies, and to reward campaign contributors, and to buy votes via earmarks. There is so much waste. And there is a name for this: It’s called corporate crony capitalism. This is not the capitalism of free men and free markets, of innovation and hard work and ethics, of sacrifice and of risk. No, this is the capitalism of connections and government bailouts and handouts, of waste and influence peddling and corporate welfare.

There's plenty more, too. She is against this endless quantitative easing, which has achieved nothing but increased inflation and sovereign debt. I think there is a real chance she could be the next president. On present form, I welcome the prospect - especially after Obama's dismal tenure.

Read about it here:

Sarah Palin talking sense.. well, you could knock me down with a feather. ;D

She does appear to have hit the nail on the head.

Their novelty black president didn't shape up too well. Might as well go for broke with a novelty female president. ;)

Oh yes, there are two types. When capitalists "get into bed" with governments, you get the old "brown envelope" economy. It is indeed cronyism when large corporates call the shots due to their financial clout. I am a strong believer in free and open competition. I am thoroughly against the type of corporatism, to which Palin rightly refers, where money buys government favours in return for reward... and is able to dictate policy.

...it's the same in life, just bigger stage and stakes. Clique you might say. There may not be an envelope as such but it amounts to the same thing.

Don't agree with it though, so never quite fit into the round hole with whatever shaped peg you're looking for... Never!

that is capatilism.....just another level.

e.g. i'm not going to help the 3 tramps that sit outside my local mcdonalds every friday night the same as you're not. the harsh reality of capitalism though is the only way forward. and we're part of it. so is sarah palin. she's consumed with the glamour of fame. she was a model too. and probably drives an enormous car. and also doesnt care about the tramps in her locality....... whatever way you rap it up is that we all, as capatalists, want to get on irrespective of how well others are doing. i say good luck to the people who are doing dodgy deals in parliament. just wish i was the one benefiting  :)

sorry nick there is a point somewhere  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

You old cynic, Webby!  ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

I may be a capitalist at heart, but I care for the genuinely disadvantaged. The work-shy I can cheerfully ignore.

I think Palin has rightly spotted the problem in the West. There is too much power invested in a relatively small but powerful political clique, just as chrisgixer correctly identifies. We want (or, at least, I want) a small government and freedom to run our lives without being ruled by cronyism - or who can "buy" the most votes.  :y

No major politician writes their own speeches these days, but I think it reflects her views, Albs.  :y

... And is why Palin will not fit in to a Majority, a camp, a group with that Honesty above all else approach. Forget it, no chance. And is why politics is flawed from the very outset, the moment it becomes a reality it instantly turns to bull shit in the exact same step.

The only step being of any success is purely a selfish one for the individual or the individuals group/clique/party/cronies whatever.

With an idealist hat on I think a Female leader could have great qualities sadly lacking in power circles for so long. Let's hope though aye.  :y

not trying to be argumentative nick, honestly, but how ironic for an american glamorous politician to be talking about the harshness of capitalism. just takes the piss really.

She's not brainless, Albs. Many of her slips (mentioning North Korea when she meant South Korea, etc.) are taken out of context. At the end of the day, you can't get where she has got by being completely thick...even in the US. ;).

The liberal media have got it in for her, though, that's for sure:
