Our Citroen Picasso 1.6 petrol is due for a cambelt soon. I will be paying my local garage to do the job. Will it be advisable to have a water pump? Or is it just certain cars, ie Omegas on which it is recommended?

dont know about water pump biut do know your local garage better have a hertz meter to set the cambelt tension!!! only way you can do it in picasso!!!!

There is also talk about the crankshaft pulley failing on these, a known problem. you might have to have this done as well.

Have it done! For an extra £20 its worth it for piece of mind. If it seizes you can wave goodbye to your new belt and it will be money wasted.

I did the cambelt on my Xantia and did the waterpump at the same time. As I say, was only an extra £20 for the part and the engine has to be stripped that far to do the belt so only takes an extra 5 minutes to replace the pump. They can often go after having a new belt.

It's just not worth the risk.
