It's like everything else

2.0 cambelt kit - scared stiff until I did one - and now done about 20+ for others

Same applies to V6 kit...

Same to head gaskets....

I'm sure once Ive done rings once, it will be a walk in the park second time around...  :y

If you decide to go down the route of changing the rings, I'd slip a new set of big end bearings in while it's apart.Won't cost much but will make it more worth the effort. :y

Rings are easy enough to fit......sump off is the hardest part!

What state were the bores in?

What state were the bores in?

They actually looked OK Mark - you could see the hone marks on them!

Does it have excess crankcase pressure? what happens if you run it with the oil cap loose/off?

Quite a bit of blow back, with cap off...
Unless the breather system is blocked solid, it does sound like worn rings/bores. Easier to do than a v6 top end rebuild though IMHO :y

 Just a thought James but if it's a Turbo could it be that at sometime the Turbo has gone and filled the exhaust with oil which wasn't cleaned out properly as you seemed pretty sure that it was the stem seals and the bores looked OK :-/.
