Clunk On Zafira A
« on: 10 August 2009, 21:51:39 »

Ok a couple of months ago I got a Zafira A 1.8 53 plate dual fuel elegance...good condition and happy enough with it especially as I got it cheap...

It has a couple of issues...when you accelerate at low speed 1st or second gear it makes a clunk which seems to vary from being mostly drivers side but occasionally pssenger side, second gear is sometimes difficult to engage (noticed today that once it clunks you can then engage it on those times you couldnt before the clunk)...also seems to be a bit of a wheel drone at most speeds from front drivers wheel...

However...it passed its MOT today with no issues other than front tyres on the limit...

Any thoughts on what could cause the clunk etc that would not show up as an MOT fail that may (or may not) also be causing the difficult 2nd gear??

Nah its not a clunk from the gearbox, its after you change gear as you accelerate...its as if something is loose and shifting due to the engine weight change....

As for changing car...53 Zafira dual fuel elegance...car cost us £2k and it went straight through its MOT without problems...any other 7 seater of same age (probably including the Zafira normally lol) certainly a lot more...

Although we buy any car will give us £3.5k for our car so tempting to change :y But parts are cheaper on Vaux and I can do a lot of the work myself as I know my way around them :y

Is your gear selector bar correctly inline with the box?
there is a little (Square) bush that likes to ware down, on the box, ( top rear of the gearbox ) from that there is a 13mm bolt about 2" away going to the gear selection bar some of them need corrected every now and then, up to now I've had it on a corsa, astra and cavalier.

Check engine mounts, my Astra was doing this, one of the engine mount bolts had sheared off following being overtightened after a cambelt change. This allowed a slight movement which caused the clunk as the driveline shunted. I can't see this relating to the gearbox but on that score after you have checked the gear linkage try giving the transmission fluid a change.

Indeed, engin mounts are the favourite.

Bit more to this...I noticed today when I was sat in the Aldi car park that turning the steering wheel to the right all is well, most of the time turning the wheel to the left causes the same clunk sound, especially if I jerk it...presumably wouldnt affect engine mounts with engine off and stationary so presumably steering related?? Steering rods could also potetially interfere with 2nd gear??

Not much chance of me wanting to find an extra 8-10k replacing a car that suits its purpose, has just flown through its MOT, is cheap to run as its dual fuel returning the cost equivalent of about 55mpg and also being a car I like (not as much as the Omega but I still like it lol) for the sake of maybe a £150 fix, especially when I got it only 2 months ago and it cost over £2k less than it should lol

One at the left side of the engine, this was the culprit on mine, one at the back near the gearbox I thinks.

Yeah the rubber deteriorates. The problem I had on mine was that one of the bolts that holds the mount onto the engine bracket had snapped which allowed a slight movement.

Can the bushes be bought seperately and replaced and is it worth it for the cost saving if so?
