Manual or auto
« on: 21 September 2009, 14:14:35 »

The four Migs I`ve owned have all been autos. Been offered choice of two mig estates, 2.2 CDX manual and 2.5 CDX manual both facelift. Apart from personal preference any pros or cons re; manual/auto. Opinions/advice please. Cheers :) :)

Age old argument....

Manual - ultimate performance, control & economy

Auto - easy 'gokart' fun, not quite as quick, 5mpg less economy

Even though I seem to spend most of my time stuck in London traffic or parked up on the M25 where an Auto should be pleasing to the Left Foot, Manual for me everytime.

I'd have a manual anytime. Frequently on here you hear of problems with auto boxes, all I could ever see going wrong with a manual is needing a new clutch.

It's all down to personal preference really, but when it comes down to it...are you willing to sacrifice speed and economy for the sake of the car changing gear for you?

Regardless of preference I would say there's more to go wrong with an auto box, particularly when you see how many posts regarding auto boxes there are in the General Help section.

Having never driven the mig with a manual box what are the boxes actually like. I can remember the old MKII,III,IV and V Cortina boxes being smooth with a decent synchromesh surely the Mig box got to be a bit better  :-/

average life of a clutch is very much down to how the driver uses or abuses it but a good rule of thumb is around 150k :y

Usual notchiness associated with Vauxhall's, but just a fairly long throw, and fairly imprecise - not ideal for box thrashing....
