Front Wiper Motor for Astra 2002
« on: 20 October 2009, 22:34:10 »

As the title says I am after a front wiper motor (dad's car). Is this a dealer part only? I have been quoted 100 pounds all in from stealers and i am reluctant to get one from a scrappy since i feel it could be a false economy. Does anyone know where for example i could get a more reasonably priced one with a guarantee.

P.S. Eurocarparts do not offer.

Any pointers would be appreciated :y

It's a pity you're not closer, we could have done a swap on SWMBO's car before it goes to the insurance scrap yard.

I'm still undecided as to whether anyone would notice if I swapped the 4 electric windows to my Astra.  ::)  ::)  ::)

I'd go for a 2nd wiper motor from the scrap yard, they're usually pretty reliable. What's the problem with yours? My Astra had a problem in that they would park where/if they wanted to. There is a cover I drilled the rivets out from and you could see that the ends of the reed type park switch were worn off - it does make me wonder exactly how many miles there are on this car  :-?  :-? - I bent them over a little more, cleaned it all up & regreased, & 3 years later is still working.
I'd go for a second hand motor.  :y   :y  :y  :y

When I turn the ignition on and when the engine is running there is a whirring/clunking sound coming from the motor even when the wipers are not activated. When they are activated, they move very slowly.

With the labour involved ideally i didn't want to fit a 2nd hand one and it prove faulty in a couple of months. None of my local scrap yards have the part either.

Do they park correctly on the screen? The nut that holds the taper spline from the motor to the mechanism can work loose and allow the motor to rum without the wipers moving. If it is the motor I think you've just been unlucky, and should consider a 'new-to-you' motor. It's not difficult to remove yourself .... honest. :y  :y  :y

They park slightly higher than they should (approx 5cms). Is the taper sline located when you remove the mounting nut?
If this is the problem would the motor run even when the wipers are not activated though?

If the nut/taper sline is loose enough then the motor can run without driving the wiper mechanism ...... it's a fault that affects  the Omegas too.  :y
IIRC you'll have to remove the whole mechanism to get to the taper spline from the motor.

By "whole mechanism" do you mean the wiper arm i.e. no need to remove scuttle panel etc?

I do do mean to remove the scuttle. I'll have another look tomorrow in the light.
Mr Haynes calls it 'the wiper motor & linkage'   it's the same idea as the Omega as far as I remember ie wiper arms off their individual tapers and then the plastic scuttle.
