They are of little use....as to drive safely you also need the side and rear windows clear plus your headlights and wing mirrors

I strongly disagree.

We already have heated rear screen and heated mirrors. Headlights warm up surprisingly quickly with 55W halogen bulb belting out infra red heat (HID's are probably rubbish, thats possibly why they need the washer jets?).

A heated screen would save me from clearing the screen and then having it frost over 2 minutes later when I was already moving :o

We all have different approaches to this but, here is what I do (e.g. this morning).

I go to the car and start it, flick the heated seats and heated rear window on.

I go inside and get some warm water, pour it on the screen, side windows and lights.

This injects a significant amount of heat into the screen so that it does not mist over and clears instantly.

The alternative is

I go to the car and start it, flick the heated seats, heated front window and heated rear window on.

I go inside and get some warm water, pour it on the side windows and lights.

Time wise, no difference but I dont have to put up with a bloody defraction grating built into my windscreen!  :P

I've always used a scraper, gives the car a chance to warm up and gets you moving a bit to warm up yourself. No corrosive mess on your paint and screen seals then either. Jobs a good 'un  :y

I absolutely despise heated windscreens. Something I'd use on a handful of days a year yet you have to put up with a myopic night driving experience 365 days a year.

When it's frosty I look at the Omega and then put on a skiing jacket and get the Westfield out of the garage. Except I couldn't find the keys this morning.  ::)

Just as well, as the ABS came in handy on some of the lanes. :o

I'm with you Mark on the warm water part. Been doing it for many years before i had the garage.
It's a good way to clear the windows, just have to remember to clear the water with the wipers & squeegee other wise it freezes again ;D

If you use Rain-X on all your glass when valeting, then use warm enough water when you need to defrost, it all runs off and does not get chance to freeze again  :y

I do the same. Start car go inside for warm water and come out and find it has GONE! (But it is alright as it won't be long before it breaks down).

I agree with others. Had a Mundeo and it was great for clearing the screen but oh my god the night time driving. I actually wrote to Ford to complain. They unsuprisingly didn't even bother with a reply.

I go outside wait for a few seconds for the Rover glowplugs to warm up and start the old bus in a cloud of smoke and loads of rattle, I then put the heated rear window on and wish I had fitted the Weaco heated seats I have sat in the shed. I then spend ages scraping all the windows so I can watch the yummy mummys taking the kids to school, god I love basic cars ;D
