It can't be a co-incidence....

Since repairing my V6, I have run it on BP ultimate or shell V power (high octane) fuel for the 1000+ miles.

It has been returning 27-29mpg on a careful run, consistently.

Last night, I pulled into a petrol station, with the tank completely empty (car was chugging  :D )

I filled up with 70 litres of standard, BP 95 Ron.


Today, I did a 230+ mile trip, under simelar conditions - mostly motorway or A road, taking it steady but not being a grandad.... couple of overtakes.

The MID is now reporting an average cons. of 35.3 mpg, under the same conditions - and the position on the gauge is much higher than it would have previously been.

And - this time I had a boot full of tools!

I have done NOTHING other than put standard petrol in, rather than the super stuff.

Can it be......  that using standard fuel is that much better???

If this thing will do 35mpg+ then it's hardly worth gassing - all my trips are distances, rather than local....

I strongly believe it's a direct result of using normal unleaded....

Every Omega I have owned has seemed more thirsty on the "optimax" fuels of this world...

Super unleaded has a greater volume of octane improvers, cleaning additives and, often, bioethanol than 95 RON. Each of these deceases the calorific value of the fuel, so you get less energy for a given volume.

Notwithstanding the fact that you might get more power and, perhaps, economy if your engine is highly strung enough to need high octane fuel, a run of the mill engine may well be more thirsty on it due to the calorific value.

More aero dynamic with all the tools in the boot and the back end being lower.  :-X  (spent too much time listening to Steve)

I recall you saying, Kev... and your comments make perfect sense.

It's just amazing on their leaflets and big posters, they claim "28 more miles per tank"..... and all this crap about improved economy.... when in reality, for 99% of standard cars, it means sweet beggar all !!

Anyhow, I'll be sticking with 95 Ron!

(Having said that, I've just bought a 100l LPG tank, so I'll be on that before long  ;D )

Hate to say this James, but
point 1
you have just built the top end? ok a thousand miles should be around the correct mileage for everything to bed in a seal properly as well as carbon up slightly,
point 2
 bp ultimate and optimax are both designed to clean out the combustion chambers to aid smoother running and better economy,
so my thoughts are, they have done thier job cleaning the whole system now and you are now reaping the benifits of using the better quality fuel,
personally i think you are reaping the benefits of all the work  of yourself and the fuel used now and wouldnt mind betting that over the next couple of thousand miles the mpg as well as smoothness and power drops off to what it was when the system gets all gummed up again using the cheaper fuels?
be interesting to see if it does!!

You might well have a point there... Best to carry out any trials once the engine has bedded in a bit more.

In addition, a thin layer of carbon, such as you would find in any "used" engine in good condition, actually reduces heat loss from the combusting charge into the cylinder head and piston and can increase efficiency. Many factors are at play though.

although the theory says higher octane fuel must bring better mileage, your results are totally reverse ..

imho either those high octane fuels really not having the stated degree or some factors in engine, change the picture as Omegatoy stated..

some time ago , before the govt start to check the fuel stations for fuel quality I experienced a similiar story..

shell 95 ron > avg 26-29 mpg (depending on weather temp)

tp 95 ron > avg 18-20 mpg :-? :-? >:(

me thinks they were adding cheapo solvents..

after the checks started  consumption become nearly the same.. >:( >:(

il report this week ive got 450miles (weekly commute) to do il will use normal fuel then il use V Power next week and see what i get from that  ;D
