Hi everyone,   I know it for a ford not a mig but I am hoping auto are generic in principle and someone can shed some light.
I am having some trouble with a friends cougar autobox. We changed the flywheel cause the ring gear was shot, topped up the box with 3 litres of oil while the car was running and drove off. Got about 100 yards and the drive just sortof faded away as I eased of the throttle, no bang or shudder, just faded away. Now there is no drive at all, dip stick for box looks like its full but there is a tapping noise and a kind of popping noise coming from somewhere that are both engine speed related. The selector moves through all positions and the reverse light works, just no drive and an odd noise. I am leaning towards draining the box completely and confirming exactly how much oil is in it as we dont really know how much was lost while we were removing/fitting it and I am not to keen on the dipstick.

did you locate the drive lugs of the tc correctly in the oil pump,assuming you did a pressure test is first port of call

Hi, we are sure we did as the box went straight on. Would that make it possible for the drive to be out of line. The car drove for a hundred yards before loosing drive though. Will see if we can find a way to pressure test the box just to see. I am concerned about the noise though to me it sounds like a dry/empty pump.

or a broken pump, if the tang on the tc is not engaged when you bolt the box on the tc will distort and allow the box to bolt on.

Cheers for the info, think maybe we should have asked more questions before we started. I guess we went wrong by putting it back together how we took it apart. ie we bolted the Tc onto the new flywheel before locating the box. Oh well back to the start. Do you think the box etc will be Ok if the drive isnt engaged properly. I think we will try and locate it up with the box mostly still on, as the engine has to be dropped most of the way out which is a nightmare. Poxy fords, why would anyone want a front wheel drive v6 with an auto box in a car that small. Well heres hoping we havent mullered something expensive and we can sort it quickly.

you can get away(just) with taking an autobox out leaving the tc behind but you allways fit the tc to the box and then the box to the flexplate(flywheel).remove box and check the oil pump on front of box, chances are its fubared along with the tc

Cheers for the good news sassanach. Will it be obvious if its met its maker. I am fearing the worst as like I said it was fine for 100 yards then stopped, which to me always says something has gone snap.
Better search for a cheap replacement, this is what you get for not saying no. Neither of us wanted to do it but we were cajoled into it. Live and learn
