Probably why they are not often seen on the roads, then. Have they been discontinued by VW now?

I would think a Passat estate was a better bet, then?

If they can make do with a smaller car yes as it will be considerably easier on the pocket

I have a new V6 Phaeton 4 motion so repairs not an issue at present but will buy extended warranty in due course. The 2004/5 models and before will be massively exepnsive on suspension problems as whole system was redesigned in that year.

They have a huge spec including 2 batteries and huge infotainment - hard drive, mp3, sd card etc with integrated phone which works best with Nokia phones as Nokia designed the system. It is quick, very smooth, touch screen suspension options, does 36 mpg but I only use it on lomg journeys - never round town. I have done about 4000 miles now and no issues - touch wood. VW garages are generally useless on helping with information.

Repair costs will be heavy compared to Omega but apear to be less than A8.

The above thread has a lot of how to's - a lot of data is on the older models and for experience with newer models you need to go into main section for general posts.

If your mate has specific issues then suggest he joins the Phaeton forum and he will get input - a lot of US posts - growing in UK and Sweden - understand China is big market for these now.

Yes!

Mega expensive with only a VW badge on it, not even an Audi badge!

probably worth it for novelty value if it was a W12

life's too short to worry about what could go wrong.

here speaketh the man  with the Holden, where the nearest dealer is 12,500 miles away.

talking about expensive, I've just bought all the stuff for the front suspension on the Bentley - 16 rubber bushes, the cheapest of which was £74

I always reconed the v10 diesel Tuareg motor was the one to go for...?

And what's with the shocks on these, why replace all 4 when one fails? Axle pair yes, but all 4? Why?

As regards the shocks this was a story arising in the US with pre 2004 cars. There was much mis information but it appears that due to a supplier change there are no more air struts for the old system and so in the event of failure you have to have the new struts and the new monitoring systm that goes with it. I think VW did the right thing for those that had a problem but no doubt one or 2 may have got the wrong side of a dealer and din't research the solution options well enough.

It is stated not to be a common fault in any case.

This was posted in 2007:

"OK, OK, hold on here before the wrong story gets out of control...
Here are the facts:

1) There are no 'known problems' with Phaeton suspension components. The failure rate across all model years has been equal or less than industry average, based upon reports made here in the forum.

2) There was a part number change made between the end of MY 2004 and beginning of MY 2005 construction.

3) For reasons unknown, the original version (MY 2004) parts are not available in North America at this time. This means if one shock fails, you have to replace the other three, because the parts cannot be mixed.

4) Volkswagen of America has been dealing with this on a 'case by case' basis, but so far, for the three cases of shock failure that have been reported from the MY 2004 fleet (that's less than 0.1% of production), they have paid for the parts and labour required to replace the other three even if the vehicle is out of warranty."

Yeah, thought so....or something along those lines anyway.

And something of a relief tbh, the phaeton light still burns.

Externally understated, not Audi, Bmw, or Merc hmmm

Still vag though.  :-/

I do like toys though, as I'm sure I may have mentioned  ;D
