Elite V6 backbox
« on: 15 October 2010, 11:27:23 »

Just had an interesting chat with a bod in one of my local tyre & exhaust places. I went to check on prices for a new backbox as the one on my car is really shabby and it looks like part of the outer skin is peeling away on the n/s.

Anyhoo, chappy tells me they don't do them for my car anymore, not for any Omega V6s actually, because they were getting loads of complaints about them being too loud. :-/

He said if I wanted they would fit one but I couldn't complain if it was too loud.

Then he couldn't give me a price anyway as they didn't have anything listed on their systems  :-?

He did mention that they could fit one for about £25 if I got one myself. I've already had a decent price from andyc for a Vx one.

The other option is to go for a cat-back s/steel Longlife system for about £400. I'm just wondering if that would have the same noise issues? The Longlife site states they can make the exhaust to suit the customer's requirements, including loudness (or lack thereof).

I would be surprised if they could make a stainless one that's as refined as the OEM exhaust. Every one I've heard has been louder.

However, since genuine OEM quality ones are no longer available (even the ones from dealers are now "factor quality" IME) you might as well get one from www.eternalcar.com and fit it yourself or take it to your exhaust fitter.

Eternal are about as cheap as you can get, they are reasonable quality and, although a little less refined than the OEM system, they are better than most parts fitted by exhaust centres.

I have the current gm version and I would not bother again, it's massively over priced for what it is.

Eternal is 1/3 of the price and only a fraction worse in build quality re tail pipe construction which is easily sorted with some chrome tail pipe covers. A tad louder maybe? Or just sound slightly  different noise? Anyway, Eternal.... via gay bay I believe...

Just emailed eternalcar as I couldn't see anything listed for my car. Their reply - sorry we don't stock anything to fit your car.

Yep. Get their 3.0 one. They will say it doesn't fit but the only slight issue is that the tail pipes are a little short on a facelift. You will want to put some chrome trims on anyway as they only have thin steel pipes.

This is for a saloon. I believe facelift estates have also had them fitted with similarly little hassle.

Thanks for all the input, folks.

After careful deliberation of all factors, including getting the system fitted if I obtained it myself, getting any warranty issues resolved, etc. etc. I decided to go with the Longlife s/s system.

It's been on the car just over a week now, and I must say I am generally pleased with it. Prior to fitting the guy said 'How much noise do you want?'

I replied 'Not much' and fair to say I can't really tell much difference over the old system. Until I give it some beans, then it does sound rather good. Throaty in an understated sort of way.

Only problem is that it has started to rattle a bit when idling. Looks like I'll be making another trip to the fitters' to get it sorted.....

Would be interested to know what it set you back in the end as I will need a new cat back system at some point.

I seem to remember reading a thread that said the quote they received from Longlife was one price but that wasn't kept at the point of installation due to the amount of pipework for a V6.

Worth getting a quote though and then giving a few weeks, as previously reported they will e-mail you with a special office price, which I did receive.

I was originally quoted £399. I then left it for a while, eventually I got another email through saying they could do me a deal. When I was at the fitters I asked what the deal was they offered - 10% off! So £360-ish which I thought was pretty good. Especially as Kwik-fit had quoted £380 for a cat-back system in mild steel....
