Omega V12
« on: 27 December 2010, 22:58:07 »

I found this short vid on youtube. Looks real. I wonder if anyone knows anything about it?

Dropping a v8 in doesn't seem so appealling now!

If it is the N73 engine, then it could be a bit of a worthy beast to have in the engine bay, with all of its 48 valves...

If it is the older M70 (as indicated it could be) then it is only 300bhp, making the LS1 the better option..

There's loads of v8 omega vids on youtube, but that seems less appealling at the thought of a v12.

I once had an idea about getting an old v70 and mounting a jag v12 in the back and making it rwd, imagine an omega like this!

It's ok mentioningV12 but V12 What?  Am assuming V12 XJS 5.3 that only developes 299bhp.

Where as the average 350 chevy with a cam and carb change would stump up 300/350 bhp with over 400 ft lbs torge for pulling trees out of the gargen.

V8 V V12    V8 Wins every time for me.

I followed the custom cars years ago, and a guy created an XJS with 6 wheels called 100+

He ripped out the V12 and dropped in a 454 Chevy with a few extra BHP instantly, plus an enormous amount of space under the bonnet.

That video shows the Rats omega. Rats being a Norwegian automatic transmission company, and the car is their showcase, albeit with a manual box but anyway, they chose the omega for it's aerodynamic shape! Could have had any car they wanted, and likewise any engine they wanted, in this case a Lexus v8!

They tuned the lump, to just short of 1000 hp I believe, and built a transmission to handle that power, which was the point of the project and their business.

The Rats web site shows the story in more detail, and where they had to cut and re weld the chassis to make it fit, with a steering rack from a Nissan as the old steering box was in the way.

To me a very interesting part of that video is how little steering input is required to get it round that oval. Although the surface will be billiard table smooth I would think, no lorries rolling round the outside lane at least.

Anyway, Gm's canned v8 project was a straight fit. Special parts, including exhaust manifolds and steering box oil cooler where needed, and I reckon the real reason the project failed lies somewhere in the those parts, and nothing to do with restricted coolant ways in the ls1 lump as I believe was claimed.
