2 x heater matrix?
« on: 08 January 2011, 23:01:49 »

my mate has a mk1 cavalier[rwd] and he has renewed all the cooling system from the radiator to the matrix including hoses but he is still not happy [eg his mrs] with the heat output.
his new idea now is to add another heater matrix, the thought here is that it will double the surface  so double the heat.
will this work? is it a waste of time?
should add that the system has been bled, thermostat is new and checked to be working.
thanks

Unlikely, if it's not getting hot enough with one then splitting it between 2 will half the heat logically. There is still a chance the stat is faulty even though it is new. Get him to remove it and test it in a pan of water on the stove :y

Ah! The days when you could remove & replace a heater matrix including brewing up & drinking it in half an hour!   :y
I used to have a Cavalier Coupé and flushed the matrix on that cos it was blocked solid.

I remember the days when one could buy either a winter or summer thermostat for most cars. Is that not the case nowadays.

I'd forgotten aout that. Years ago I asked at a motor factor in Fareham, Pompey for one of them, his reply was that they never have cold enough winters down south for them.  ;) ;) ;)

We have recently had a spate of posts about heaters not working effectively and temp gauges reading low.
Made me wonder if the stats are opening just a bit too soon for the weather we've been experiencing.

Perhaps folks are demanding more heat from the heater system than can be provided and thus, creating an extra radiator.

I know with the wifes Fusion if I leave the heater blower on low as well as the temp until the engine (by guage) heats up enough then I get warm output.

If you call a cabin demand too early in this cold weather it takes ages for heat to develop....

Would that not justify the need for a winter stat, that would open at a higher temp?

Probably but, that said, we are governed by and large by the calling from the big companies.  If there is no (year on year) demand for such things then they wil not supply it.

Wonder what options are available for the Scandahooligan countries?

Although I hadn't had any obvious problems with my 'new' going-to-work TD Astra I'd noticed that the temp gauge never got past about a third of the scale ...80+a bit instead of halfway that the previous shed did ...  90
I put a new Vauxhall stat in the other day and the difference was apparent within a mile or so from home. And it now sits half way on the gauge.
It's a pity a stat change on a V6 isn't the 10 min job it is on a TD Astra  :-?
