ok mate ill photograph the whole thing :):):)

the way im gonna do it is as follows:

1. sanding the area down as much as i can (its actually really hard to sand down to the metal)
2. treating the area with liquid rust remover (when i did it before it took a few coats of this stuff to remove all traces of rust!)
3. once dry, fill in the area. ive never used this so am unsure whether ill need to sand after application or not???
4. couple of coats of grey primer
5. couple of coats of the colour (mines star silver II)

:)

7. repeat steps 1 thru 6 in 6 months time when the rust re-appears.

you need to take a grinder to the rust and get rid of it completely to make it last, means more filler work though

i'll second that that rust has to be gone gone gone! grinding is the only way to go and then give it some anti rust i don't know how bad it is but you can always rivet (or weld if you have the facilities) new metal in tap it back and then start with the filler, don't forget to knock back your filler/primer after application and between the top coat and laqueur wet and dry 2000 grit and with the final laquer  you can mud it ( a harder cutting compound) or t-cut and plenty of elbow grease to really make it shine, i would suggest a light top coat and then the final top coat and the laquer as it stops the runs! the biggest downfall of home sparaying is the spray fall and the base not being clean enough.

As per lanky Edd China on Wheeler Dealers, apply the filler in thin layers, then sand back, repeat as necessary until you have the desired finish/profile.  :y
