Hi guys,

first of all thanks for all the x type info. ill let everyone know if i take the plunge ;)

right, back to immediate omega queries :)

im gonna have another go at removing the rust on my wheel arch. its starting to come back already  ::) as everyone here said it would.

ok 2 questions:

1. can anyone recommend a drill bit grinding attachment?
2. halfords can make up the exact original paint. how do i find out what code it is? and as its silver do you think the wear over 11 years will render the original paint they make up unmatchable to my car now???

any thoughhts would be bril. thanks guys  :y :y :y

Depends entirely on how much rust needs to be cut out.

Paint code is on B post drivers side

yeah sorry my bad, i found it in the maintenance section :)

is it likely that it will still be totally different due to faded colour over the 11 years. i suppose silver is better than red as that would pink be now lol

I'm afraid, the answer is yes..the correct color tone can be achieved only by painters after some trials..

once I saw an old painter adding drops of red to achieve the faded color tone   :o :o (original color was gray not silver)

Why not do the J R Hartley thaaaang and peruse the yellow pages for a motor paint factors?  Go to your nearest, borrow their paint shade chips, get the correct shade and get them to make up a couple of rattle cans of the correct (age faded) paint?

Webby, one point that must be mentioned , I dont think UK sun will change the color as much as here.. so difference wont be that bad.. :y

When I need paint I take something to the paint suppliers that has the body colour on and can be easily removed from the car. This is usually the petrol filler flap.

The paint suppliers can then use it to get a better paint match.

definitely no laughs.. matching colors are one of the hardest jobs that rare people can do.. I suffered many times :(

and color preparing machines definitely fail..

Not sure Halfords can match it, mine is Z147 silver and it was not on their system when I asked a while ago. The star silver on the shelf was too dark so i guess it is Z157.

I had a can made up,make sure you quote the right code!!,  at a local paint shop which was spot on, I don' think the sun factor effects silver much over here

Star silver a bit tricky as there are at least 3 shades. ::)

yes for my black there was three different shades but matched it perfectly with the chips which i'm sure halfords don't do!, as for the grinding buy a cheapie from argos and really take it back to bare metal and then coat with your rust killer and then fill i usually use a flexible filler as the hot and cold weather between arch/the repair and the body can cause cracking (i've heard), but best of luck second go!, third times a charm!! :y

Any chance you could do a how to guide with some pics, I have a small rusty bit on one wheel arch and a small bit on the bottom corner of both front doors, I am not sure of the best way to tackle it so some sort of guide would be great.
