Average speed cameras.... Is it me???
« on: 10 March 2011, 19:19:05 »

I'm driving along the M4 past Newport today, through a 50mph limit with average speed cameras and being a good boy I drop down to 50, whack on the cruise and grudgingly poodle along.... ::)

Blimey!! I think I was the only one!  They're tearing by at 70-odd, then banging on the brakes when they see a camera  :o and if they're not whizzing by they're practically in my boot!! >:(

So I'm starting to wonder if there's something I don't know... :-/  Do these cameras actually work? ::) Has anyone here been caught by an average camera??  :'( Or are they all just numpties?  :D  If they do work they must be coining it in, 'cos not many were averaging 50!!  :-/

Nearly got involved in a pile-up at the weekend when the cretin 2 cars ahead did an ABS job in response to seeing a SPECS camera in an average speed zone. Sad thing was he was doing the limit anyway. Had he even been slightly aware of what he was doing ... No. Not worth finishing that sentence. ::)

Clearly we've got the the stage where most of the populace don't understand difficult words like "average". >:(

I thought I was the only one who thought this! I drive along at fifty...five and roll my eyes as they all steam past, then stamp on the anchors. They're usually then found doing 40mph for 30 seconds before they're back up to 65 and overtaking me again  ::)

People definitely do get caught by them, the people who suddenly stop when they see the SPEC are clowns.

I just stick the cruise on 50-52mph, fairly sure the cameras leave a healthy margin, nowhere near 70 though!  Seen some go past 60ish, don't see any one drive any faster than that though.

I always have the average speed on the MID and reset it at each camera. That way, if I get held up by some idiot, I know exactly how fast I can go to make up my average.

Well, it's an "average speed limit" after all. :P

I've noticed the same, slow into the zone, then foot down, then brake again.

Morons...

That said I usually wack the cruise at 80/85 on a standard cruise, i'll fly past someone only to be over-taken later. 5 mins later they slow down to 60 again, and I go flying past!

No only do most drivers not understand average, they don't know how to keep their foot in the same place!

Tentatively touching wood, I know of no one who has received a ticket from an average speed camera site.  :-/

Any volunteers to be the first?

Didn't think so... :-/

Safest to presume that they are working, sorry meant active, as we all know that they don't actually work... ::)

well as the question has been posed then ill my (probably obvious) question.....

the speed cameras take your average speed between one set of cameras on that particular road to the other, and presumably they can work out the average based on how long it takes you to get from one camera to the other..............

so, how do they know which car to snap. people change lanes and there are exits and slip roads to join the road near me?!

A friend of mine, who can't be named for legal reasons, went through an Average set of speed Camera's which are set at 70 MPH, he went through at a GPS verified 101 MPH and the camera's lit the place up like a bomb had gone off. He goes through there everyday, but this particular day after driving over 500 miles, he totally forgot as he was playing around with another friend to see who has the quickest vehicle.

Anywho this was way back in November and he hasn't heard anything, some say though that they are only active at this particular site when an Average Speed of lower than 70 MPH is set, and they flash to give you a warning. Personally I never want to run the risk  :)

Its very simple.

Every single car passing through is captured, much like ANPR.

Every single car exiting the system is captured, the average is calculated.

If its over, your done. Simples. (if its turn on)

And no, changing lane to avoid it is an urban Myth  ;)

aaarrrrr ANPR! cheers del.

surely though if theres an exit that you want to come off at between the two you can floor it cos youll never reach the end camera which will snap you!

Now that they've sorted it out... When they were first introduced you could, as long as you left the area in a different lane ;)

However, the average speed is rarely calculated between consecutive cameras... Normally 2 or 3 apart ;)
