Last time I lost a wheel (a few years ago), it was because the garage had done them up too tight. I was driving quite fast at the time
, but fortunately a ditch slowed me to a halt.
too tight?
how can they come off like that?
Excess loads on them, they eventually shear. Which puts excess stress on the others, and fairly quickly went braking hard for a 70 degree tight right hander, you see your NSF wheel beating you to the apex... ...around the sme time you get that unmistakable sensation of the brake disc shattering as it ploughs into tarmac.
... and a rather moist feeling in the seat of your pants

Oddly, I was unphazed by it, I was more worried about the bollocking I was going to get from the garage (was in works van).
Fortunately, I had a ladder on the roof, a butt (test phone) in the back, the knowledge to 'borrow' somebodys phone line, and was 'parked' just a few yards from a telegraph pole

And yes, that miserable tinker Rose did tear me off a strip, made me fill out a driver misuse form, even though it was his technicians that breaked it all up, and could have easily ended up being far more serious... ...much like the time when the engine fell out (and that was another driver misuse form).
