is different omega B steering box interchangeable?
« on: 25 March 2011, 13:35:37 »

Hello,
i have a leakage in my steering box and i found another - a used one.
The problem is that my box is 90538728 and the one i found is 90538679.
Is it possible to replace mine with 90538679? Will be there any disadvantages?

If it came out of an omega it will go back in an omega, although there may well be some battling with space available on various engine sizes.

As for that specific part and the differences, it would seem that relates to the internals, not sure if all models have servo tronic for instance? Maybe someone would confirm? 2woody knows his steering boxes. I guess internal geerings might change also? Maybe? :-/

Only 6 cyl models used to have servotronic (not sure about 2.2DTi), not sure if this means a different steering box though, I guess it would be...

they all bolt in the same hole for a start.

Internal gearing is all the same as far as I know, the differences relate to the drop arm length and servotronic.

A box equpped with servotronic will have an electrical solenoid valve sticking out of the side, near the top. I wouldn't suggest using a servotronic box in a non-servotronic car or vice-versa.

secondly, ensure that you have the same length of steering arm on your "new" box as your old one, or you'll need to change the idler arm, too.

having different steering geometry on the left hand side to the right hand side is not beneficial to handling in any way.

good question though !

AFAIK, for Omegas, there is only one length idler arm - would that imply the steering box will all have same length arm?

Hmm. Sounds like there could be a few Omegas running around with "interesting" steering geometry given that the idler arms have been regarded as "one size fits all". :-?

that's what made me check !

one length I think was only fitted to 4-cylinder Omega A ( i.e. Carlton )

the second length is the "standard" length, which originated again in Omega A and Senator B

the third is the Omega A GSi (i.e. Carlton GSi), which is shorter, giving more steering "feel". Fitted to one of my "LSC" cars.

I think your answers are there if you look for them ;)

Possible differences are whether it has the servotronic solenoid and whether the pitman arm is the same length.

I'm not sure anyone will be able to tell you what the difference is from just two part numbers so I guess you need to check the above details on the 2 boxes to your satisfaction, or keep looking for a box of the same part number.
