Just drove back from scotland
« on: 24 April 2011, 00:04:19 »

Just driven from Fort william to Swansea and then back to cardiff (via Kidsgrove in stoke).
Was 570 miles in total, and i managed it on one tank of fuel with miles to spare.
Was up there for a holiday with family.

Think i averaged 43mpg or so, sitting at 70mph on the M6 and M5.

I stopped at stoke to pick up a full set of leather seats for my car and some elite alloys and tyres that i bought from darth loo knee.

Somehow managed to shoehorn it all in as well as our bags etc.
was mm to spare lol

Thanks Darth!!

TD manual on a motorway run returns good MPG.  Its around town that kills it

ISTR a friend of mine getting ~800 out of a tank on a long run with his 2.2DTi estate. I thought that was pretty damned impressive (and mileage I dream of ;D)

I reckon a manual TD could get close to that on a run, esp on continental roads, where drivers can drive, rather than sit in the BMW lane.

Indeed so - plus I should add that when Mark's driving for work, he tends to sit at 65 rather than 85..

Must admit I did seriously consider swapping the V6 for another TD (but manual this time).. but since most of my driving is around town when I'm in the Omega, I'm not sure I'd gain a lot.

saying that,
I've averaged 35+ around town so far if i'm fairly steady and i dont boot it.
And on shorter runs too, at 60 or so on A roads, i get even more than on the motorway.

I have just done a 500 mile round trip up to Blackpool and back to Buckinghamshire and averaged almost 35 mpg in my 3.2 Elite, which I was really pleased with :)

That is good for the 3.2.

What rpm does the Auto sit around at 70mph?

About 2800 without actually looking, for mine, a 2.6

Yes about the 3000 mark, with the cruise set at 70 and I had the climate on too.

:o Bloody hell, the best I can manage on my fairly regular trip from London to North Devon is barely 30mpg, and that's with cruise set at a steady 75mph.

mine had a 220 mile solo run at the weekend from dartmouth to west cornwall and back which is quite hilly and wasn't sparing the coals and averaged 27.5mpg which was a lot better than the 17.5mpg  :'( it did towing 1500kg of pikey palace on the same run a few days earlier
