Given the oe system seems to be the best, but no longer available. I was wondering how best to try and pre long it's life, if at all. :-/

Main problem is the join, centre sections to back box. Moisture on the inside gets blown up the slope to the silencer and leaks out at the join rusting the outside as well. Least that's how I see it.  :-/

But what to do about it...?


Wondered about that heat insulation wadding they fit round headers to protect body work etc on special builds.
Wrap some of that round to keep the heat in and hopefully evaporate the moisture off quicker. But not sure if it's absorbent and might retain water doing more damage...?  :-/

TBH, I wouldn't have thought the gasses were hot enough at that point in the exhaust :-/ :-/

You've got nothing to lose by trying it, except a few quids worth of heat bandage

I'm in the same boat as chrisgixer - my Elite is still on original exhaust, but I doubt for much longer...

sounds daft but i just changed a system on a 407 and the rear silencer had a drain  hole in it.this was not a rusthole as the back box was fine never seen this before but must have passed mots okay

I put a Bosal system on my Desmond 2 years or so ago after the Vauxhall system rotted off.

The Bosal was never the same for quiteness. I considered replacing this when I put a new downpipe and cat on a few weeks ago but didn't bother - I should have, as it's now beginning to annoy the keek out of me.

The trouble is, I don't know what system I should use to give me the same level of refinement I had with the OE one.

The Bosal system fitted to my Senator lasted just over 2 yrs ie just till the guarantee ran out. That was when I built my own stainless system.

You don't want a s/s Jetex then. It's nothing like in the same league as a full on 6" dia Max Power system, but noisier than OE.

I'm not sure what to do Andy.  The system from the cat back appears to be intact but there is a terrible flat rasp from the exhaust note - although I could hear something rattling inside the back box after wiggling it about a bit when I was underneath the car taking the back discs off last week.

I like a quiet exhaust and only wish the original Vauxhall one was still available.

Mine had a Bosal on when I bought it and I eventually got bored of the drone at 60-70 so I was lucky to find a stainless Irmscher backbox which turned out to be quieter all round(except over 4000RPM when it makes a gorgeous noise) The old one was full of rusty mush when it came off!

My centre box has a blow now and like yourself I don't know which way to go.

I reckon there's a a year, maybe two at a push, left in the oe system.

That's something I have wondered about ...

Would save the join area, but some rust would form round the hole, but then the join has 4 holes round it, where the slots are, and that lasted long enough....    :-/

Eternal seems the only cost effective option, but I'd be disappointed with the quality, if not the price. Note quality is better than the current crop of tc exhausts(similar to, if not made by,bosal) but still priced similar to the oe system less 20%. which still seems steep to me...?

Current crop tc exhaust was £311. Now less 20%. So £248 ...?

Wouldn't it be good if someone with excellent metalworking skills and access to good quality materials could build us all custom systems to the same level / better level than the Original GM systems?
